Could it be throw out bearing?

My 48 Merc is acting up. Went for a good two hour drive on Thursday with no issues. Went to start it today and heard an awful noise. Sounded like intermittent metal on metal ticking. Noise starts as soon as any pressure is put on the clutch pedal, stops when taking pressure off pedal. Engine and...

    Side cover selector shaft seals

I need to replace the selector shaft seals on my 1951 Mercury ******. I have read that the retaining pins will need to be drilled out in order to get the shifter arms off. Does anyone have experience doing this? What are the retaining pins replaced with? A split pin? Nut and bolt? Thanks in advance.

    Draglink zerk problem

Hi all: I cannot get grease to go into draglink fitting on passenger side. My grease gun is working fine, I removed the zerk fitting and grease passes through it, tried to clean inside of joint with a nail while zerk fitting was off but that made no difference. Anyone run into this before and...

    Odometer/turtle Dilemma

I hope that someone can help me figure out what is wrong. I had the rear ended rebuilt on my 1948 Merc 114. Have only driven it a few miles since. My speedometer seems to work Ok but the odometer is going backwards. I have looked at the turtle and it is on the driver's side of the torque tube. I...

    Sloppy steering dilemma

My recently finished 1948 Merc restoration likes to wander from side to side while driving down the road. I have read several "steering adjustment" posts and read the Vanpelt article, so I thought I would try and tighten things up. Here is the situation so far. With wheels on the ground the free...

    Mystery noise

Went for a bit of a drive the other day, after about ten miles I felt a slight hesitation, drove on and it got worse to the point that I had to pull off the road. Checked under the hood and everything seemed OK. Tried to start her up, would not start until I choked it. Was able to get home...

    Carb gasket wicking gas

I recently had my Holley 94 double barrel carb rebuilt. Seems to be working fine. I have noticed that the upper gasket is damp with gas, more toward the front above the bowl than the rear of the carb. I have made sure that the bolts are tight. Anyone seen this? Is the a fix? The shop that did...

    Electric tach question

I have a 1951 V8 flathead in my car. Electrical system converted to 12V. Just had the engine re-built and thought it would be a good idea to install a little tach under the dash to keep an eye on the rpms. I bought a cheap off shore tach and installed it. With the pulse wire on the -ve side of...

    Fuel pump question

Hi All: I have a 1951 flathead V8 in my 1948 Merc 114. There is gas seeping from the underside of the fuel pump. The gaskets themselves do not seem to be wet. I used a mirror to look at the underside of the pump body, it looks like there are two small holes opposite one another, gas is seeping...

    Another rear shock question

I have a 1948 Merc 114. When I purchased the car the previous owner had replaced the original shocks with tube shocks. The front ones are fine but the rear ones are a problem. The rear bottoms out when I drive over any small bump. The upper end of the shockis mounted to a bracket on the side of...

Hi all: I have a 1948 Merc 114 fordor. Just got the car back from a major overhaul. Rear end, engine and ****** all rebuilt. Before this work was done I had noticed that the shift linkage at the ****** case was always wet with oil. Since the rebuild there is still oil on the linkage where it...

    Not for the purist?

When I purchased my 1948 Merc project over a year ago the interior was gutted, the fenders needed restoration, dash had been torn out and lots of parts were missing or needed restoration. The engine and drivetrain were in and there had been work done on the undercarriage. It had been converted...
