    Synchro Ring ID

I've pulled my '40 transmission apart and have a question about the brass synchro rings...... The second gear ring is marked "182", and the third gear ring is marked "178". Do these numbers have any particular significance, or just a manufacturer's mark, etc.? Thanks, Joe

    '40 Ford Transmission Question

I've installed my freshened engine back in my coupe, with a rebuilt 3 speed transmission. While shifting is fine, there is one problem I've noticed in my initial test drives. I live on a hill, and the transmission does not seem to want to come out of 1st gear when descending this steep hill...

    8BA Rod Question

I've pulled my '40 engine, which has been updated with 8BA rods, one piece valve guides, etc. When removing the bearing shells, I noticed that not all of the rods have the small hole drilled, which lines up with the hole in the bearing shell. I also noticed that at least one journal has a rod...

    Question For The Engine Experts

I pulled my '40 engine out to freshen it up. I'm seeing something I've not seen before, regarding the rear main bearing. The upper half of the bearing (inserted into block) has a groove machined perpenticular to the main oiling groove, extending towards the back of the black. There is a very...

    Axle Thread Questions

I'm completing a brake job on my '40 coupe, getting ready to re-install the drums. I'm finding that neither nut wants to go back on the axle, more than about 1 1/2 turn. I purchased some new castle nuts with the same results. The threads don't look too bad, and I'm wondering what I need to do to...

    Engine Questions

Ok, so I've pulled my engine out of my '40 coupe. I'm going through it to check everything out. It's bored .060 over, with 4 ring pistons, 8BA rods, and one piece valve guides. I'm in the process of pulling the crank out, and I'm wondering about the fasteners. On my '36 LB engine, the crank...

    Worlds Fair Ford?

Just bought one of the old service bulletin binders with bulletins dated from 1938 to the mid- 40's. On the inside front, there's an inscription from an apparent one time owner. His name was John J Roth. It gives his address as 186-15 Foch Blvd. Long Island, NY Beneath that it states: Service...

    Another Valve Question

I posted a question a couple of weeks ago regarding pulling the valves from my '40 block. It appeared that I had mushroom style valves, but they turned out to be '51-'53 valves. My question is this: Every piece of literature I have on flatheads lists the valve stem diameter as .3115. My valves...

    '40 Valve Removal

OK, I'm taking the engine apart on my stock '40 motor, except for adjustable lifters. I've read all the threads about the issues removing the "mushroom" valves. I'm running into the same problem of the guides not moving down far enough to pull the horseshoe clips. I'm assuming there will be some...

    Low Compression

I've got a new (to me) '40 Ford Coupe. I've had it about 6 months and have fought a number of issues regarding intermittent spark (new wiring harness to alleviate short between resistor and coil), and carburation problems (thanks Uncle Max). The Barn has helped me immensely in troubleshooting...

    Rear Wheel Bearings

With all of the talk recently regarding the quality of the rear wheel bearings being reproduced, I have a question. I recently bought a pair of bearings at a Phoenix hot rod shop which were in Mac's packaging. There is a 68-1225 part number on the packaging. The interesting thing is that they...

    Mechanical Temperature Gauges

I'd like to run two mechanical temperature gauges in my stock '40 Ford Coupe. I've got a couple of Stewart Warners' around I was going to use, but it's obvious that the coupling that is on the sensor end of the gauge will not fit the threaded openings in the heads. I've checked the local (good)...

    Y-Block Intake Install Question

I've got a friend that is re-installing his intake manifold on his 272 Y-Block. He's wondering about if, and what he should use for sealant? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

    Starter not Engaging

I drove my '40 Ford (stock) to a car show today. When attempting to leave, the starter would spin, but not engage the flywheel. Battery seems fine. I know that cleaning the bendix drive will sometimes solve the problem. Can anyone offer any other suggestions / solutions? Thanks, Joe

    6.50 x 16's on 4" Rim?

I'm looking for new tires for my '40 Ford Coupe. Looking for a bit of a "big & little" look. Will the stock 4" rims work with the 6.50 x 16's, or do I need a wider rim? Thanks, Joe
