Starter not Engaging

I drove my '40 Ford (stock) to a car show today. When attempting to leave, the starter would spin, but not engage the flywheel. Battery seems fine. I know that cleaning the bendix drive will sometimes solve the problem. Can anyone offer any other suggestions / solutions?
Thanks,
Joe

I broke one of the bolts holding the spring, motor was running and I accidently hit the start button, but Walt is correct it is a bendix problem.

I have had a problem like that and found that it gets stuck on end of splines,it may have been and afther market, but wouldn,t free up.I replaced bendix didn,t want to happen again.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Pulled the starter.....turns out one of the bolts was sheared off. I guess my new question now is, does this just sometimes happen, or is it an indication of some other issue? The starter seemed to have been operating fine until the problem arose yesterday.

If the bolts are worn and not fully tightened the lock can keep them from unscrewing, but they are worked back and forth causing them to fatigue ---then break.
