Lost my Aooogah! Got it back...

Now that I have excellent, reliable brakes, I attacked my poorly running engine. It just wouldn't idle at less than 550 and would often die at stop signs. It was cranky, popping, etc. Clearly, I had vacuum issues. So, I pulled the manifolds and found crumbling gaskets across the board. Cleaned...

    Brake lining rivet tool comparison...

I haven't riveted a brake lining in about a hundred years. We'll, since A&P school, at least...1977. So here I am, installing bonded brake linings. I bought the hammer-style tool from one of the obvious Model A vendors. After using it on two linings, I went looking for "better". I found one...

    Oddities...duct tape!

Well, I've never seen this application for Duct Tape before... The rim of the bearing nose in the Left Rear brake drum had about 1/2" of duct tape wrapped around it...one layer. It was disintegrating but still tacky. None of the other drums had it. Weird!

    Brake disassembly, etc.

Like I told Miz Diane, these are the first drum brakes I've done since I was a teenager before I converted my VW to discs. I'm replacing the stamped drums with cast-iron. This is the start of that process. I've started with the passenger side front. Tomorrow I'll do the driver's side front. It...

Repair worn threads for floorboard screws.

Having had the floorboards out a time or three whilst recently speedometer cabling, I was wondering how to repair the 12-24 threads for the floorboard screws. Several of mine are barely there. A couple appear to have been beaten into submission with a body dolly and a ball-pein hammer (and then...

'31 Deluxe Coupe dome light...anyone got one for sale?

Looks like they've (Snyder's, Bert's, Moss, Mike's, etc.) been out of stock for 5 yrs. This is the round one with the integral switch. Mine has been modded with what I think is an instrument-panel light (the one that mounts under the dash). It is pretty pitiful. Solder was used by the cup-full...

    De-fueling and re-fueling...

Naturally, just 10mi ago, I filled the gas tank for the first time...and found that the gas valve leaks intermittently (position sensitive). Luckily, I have a new replacement on hand as the previous owner said it "leaked a bit", so it was in one of my first orders. Of course, I now have to...

    Hello baby, here's your rattle!

I just got back from a "sans-speedo cable" drive...about 6 mi. Amazingly, the speedo cable is very quiet when absent. It may have been kicking up a fuss back home in the garage... OTOH, I was laughing the entire drive. Is there anything in a Model A that doesn't rattle? It is probably the most...

    Speedo cable noise...

Based on searching the forum, greasing the speedo cable is another one of those "everybody uses something different" subjects. I have a gun full of Moly grease and one of Red lithium grease. Snyder's sells a tube of speedo-cable grease, but unless I buy a new unit, I'll use what I have. I may...

    Carburetor fun...

The Coupe came with two Tillotson carbs, the one it was running on is an "X" and the one in the "parts box" is an "F". I haven't been happy with the X as it is leaky...and it doesn't run to my expectations. I learned pretty quickly to shut the fuel off and run the bowl dry every time I shut her...

Front (angled) floorboard won't come out...

I'm removing the floorboards for the first time. Not rocket science...but the front angled board feels like it is glued in place. I have all the screws out...the bottom board came out easily. Am I missing something?

    Ditched the "Air Maze"...

During my recent head gasket investigation, I noted that the spark plugs were seriously carboned up. Black black black. The engine wasn't running properly...like it was running rich (smelled like it too). I still think the (Tillotson) carb is a problem...but I'm going thru all the easy things...

Lemme ask a "hand throttle" question...

In messing about, learning things, etc., I've noticed that the hand throttle works pretty well up to about halfway...then it gets stiff...and never gives full throttle. I was astounded to see that the actual connection from the steering column to the whatever-that-Rube...

    Time for a head gasket...

Massive amounts of oily steam from the exhaust...suddenly running poorly. Looks like I get my first Model A head gasket lesson! It isn't leaking externally, no water in the oil. She just started pumping steam and I'm getting a bunch of carbon/water on the floor out of the exhaust (I think...

Distributor retention screw (in cylinder head)...

Whilst working on my Coupe, I have noticed that the distributor retention screw threads in the head are wallowed out. I bought a new screw from Snyder's but it is just as loose as the old one. It barely tightens up, even if I hold my mouth right. What's the solution? I've used a lot of...

    Good neighbors love Model As

Beautiful day out, 57F and sunny. I got my chores done, had some lunch and decided to take the Coupe out for a neighborhood drive. She fired right up and once warm (quickly, she's kept inside at 70F), I pulled out into the neighborhood, honking at my nearest neighborette (who laughed, and her...

    31 Coupe, the Tasseling...

The Green Hornet is a "Deluxe" and as such, has a rear windows shade (at least, I think that was part of the deluxe package). When I bought it, there were two interior-colored strings hanging down from either end of the shade. They don't do anything... So, I asked Miz Diane for ideas to dress...

    Armored cable woes...

I think I have something wrong with my armored cable (from switch to distributor). I've been chasing "no spark" all day. Timing is spot on. I rebuilt the original distributor to factory spec., used the original condenser. Yes, I've done all the VOM tests based on the Les Andrews book. I fail...

Still moving the seat back in the '31 Coupe...

I'm still at it...but it is coming to a close. I got the package shelf cut back 2-1/2 inches (took 8 zip wheels in the dremel) and after a bit of fettling, the seat now fits all the way back against the shelf. I took my aviation snips to the cut-off portion of the shelf (where the wood brace is...

    Headlight lens alignment...not light pattern.

Yes, I know this is a bit silly and I am really the opposite of OCD...but also a retired engineer/draftsman/CAD. I like symmetry, I notice crooked pictures on the wall. While futzing around with the headlights, (installing "adjustable" LEDs from Snyder's) I noticed the headlight lens...
