Good neighbors love Model As

Beautiful day out, 57F and sunny. I got my chores done, had some lunch and decided to take the Coupe out for a neighborhood drive.

She fired right up and once warm (quickly, she's kept inside at 70F), I pulled out into the neighborhood, honking at my nearest neighborette (who laughed, and her ancient mother smiled widely). We drove the 2mi loop and then circled back down towards my section. As I was preparing to turn onto my street, the A just quit. Very quietly, no popping no backfiring, nothing. I tried to bump start her as we coasted to a halt...nope, dead as a doornail.

I pulled over, stopped and tried to re-start. Starter cranks fine, nothing happens. So, I get out and pull the hood to see if there's anything obvious. Distributor looks fine. Gas glass is clean and clear. No breaks or shorts in any wires.

Fortunately, the road in this section is pretty much dead flat. I had passed the T turn to my house, so I pushed her back 15yds and got her swung around to head home...and I heard a voice...then two. "Can we help?"

I had 4 people pushing (including me)...on a dead flat road. The one guy's wife peeled off as soon as she felt redundant. We really only had to keep one hand on her once she got moving. Only 300yds to the driveway. Glad I had touched up the tire pressure!

The ramp into my driveway is a tad steep but I told them to push hard and I'd attack it at an angle. A little inertia does wonderful things, she went right up and then it was a doddle on the flat concrete. I opened up the garage door and we fingertipped her back in. Another benefit of owning an A...they're light as a feather!

Thanks all around, of course. Nice to have nice neighbors!

I dunno what happened. I'll sort it out tomorrow. My suspicion is the carb. No gas smell in the engine compartment...that Tillotson is a leaker and if it ain't leaking, something's plugged up. I have a kit for it. I also have a Marvel going together and a Zenith that needs the inlet fitting sorted out (weeping around the threads). It ain't that I'm shy on carbs.

I'll do the normal ignition and other tests, of course. The dist is a fresh rebuild to original spec., plugs are new., ignition switch and cable is new.

LOL. Yes, I checked before I left and when it happened. I have done that myself...learned to not trust fuel gauges on newly acquired vehicles. When I first got her, I checked the gauge reading with a dip stick. If Miz Diane doesn't have me booked for something today, I'll start sorting it out.

If you think it's "no spark", check if a fuse blew or a bad contact with a fuse holder. I had the same effects once. It was a bad dash light socket and blew fuse which killed ignition.

Sorry, I got nabbed by the "yard work" monster before I could hide out in the Garage Mahal. I'll try again tomorrow. SWMBO sez she's got nothing scheduled...

Starter works, lights work, so no fuse issues (I did check anyway, when she quit, as I just installed one of those converter things to allow a modern blade-type fuse).

Finally got a few minutes to diagnose. Elect. first: 6V everywhere except to the open point...just 1V there. Pulled the dist and the points are shorted out. Removed the upper plate and one of the fixed point screws is laying on the lower plate...against the buss bar.

The other one was not tight. Removed both, tiny drop of blue loctite on the threads, reinstalled. Dist. back in, re-timed...presto! Started right up!

Back on the road...
