31 A stops after short start up

My 31 A stock has good flow to the carb, clean and steady. It starts easily but runs for 4 -10 seconds then dies. It will start up again almost immediately but dies again and does this repeatedly despite choke or throttle variations. The bowl valve occasionally will stick closed but responds...

    fuel supply problem??

This is about my 31 A. All stock, unmodified. It is in my metal building and not my driver right now. I do start it up and run it around the block every 4-6 weeks, just to keep things working. Even with this things varnish up and require removing the carburetor cleaning it etc. This...

    36 running rich

This is a 36, entirely stock,21 stud engine with a Stromberg Carb. It runs like a top, but I only get 8-9 MPG. Checking two plugs next too each other they both are black so I must be dealing with a rich mixture. Is this totally the carb? If so what is the most common cause of a rich mixture in...

36 Hand brake will not catch

This is a stock mechanical hand brake. Pull back to apply and lock on. Push button release. It was working in a somewhat finicky manner after a full restoration on my 36 Cabriolet. Brakes etc. all adjusted according to the books. Now the ratchet catch at the end of the brake lever and pedal...

    charge battery via alternator lug

This is a 31 ford stock except for a 12V system with a single wire output Alternator. Can I charge the battery (witch is hard to access) with out harming the diodes by connecting one lead of the charger to the alternator lug and the other to ground? See any problems with that? Negative...

    36 light switch body problems

This is a 36 ford but I have a 31 also and it seems to me the light switch mechanism is pretty much the same for both. In my 36 a fuse would blow each time I turned on the lights. Checked all the wiring--- aok. Then noted in the switch body a defect in the bakelite insulation between the...

    36 mechanical brakes

I got my 8 year 36 Cab complete restoration project on the road, runs great, very happy will all except when I use the foot brake it tends to partially set the hand brake. Both work fine but this probably should not happen ---right! How do I correct this?? Help! thanks Bruce

    oil out of the carburetor

My 31, stock, completely restored 10 yrs ago with absolutely no significant problems. Yesterday (warm here 95) I first noted the car heating up more than normal, then white oil smoke out the tail pipe. Stopped at a friends shop and opened the passenger hood and oil everywhere. Thought it was...

Front fender brace for 36 cabriolet

Just put the fenders on my 36 Cabriolet restoration. I have two different front fender supports. One is 21 1/2" long and the others are 23" long, the short ones can be bent a little and will pull the fender in a little and the longer ones will push the fender out a little depending on where it...

    36 Cabriolet uppper hood hinge

Getting close to finishing my restoration. I'm a little confused as to the top hinge. There is an inner rolled flanged riveted to the top on the hood. Is this what is called the "inner hinge"? Does the top chromed hinge with the rolled edges just slide over this and attach to a bracket and the...

    No Spark? '31-12V

One should be able to get a reasonable spark out of a coil with the ignition on and with access to the points opening them. Right! I have held the coil to distributor cap wire close to a good ground and nothing! Could a bad condenser do this? Or is it more likely the coil. There is a resistor...

    front engine mount replacement

The questions are related to a unmodified '31 sedan. I rebuilt the engine 30+ yrs. ago. My recollection is that with the help of the local "A guy" we used two hard rubber grommets on either side of the chassis member instead of the standard springs and plate. These had holes in them and were...

    36 cabriolet top questions

A little history here. 36 cabriolet in the process of restoration. Top just installed, and will fold back with a lot of work. The middle photo shows this. The front iron with the latch that locks the front bow seems a little high for the boot (not attached yet) not to have a protruding lump...
