Strange rear of the car low frequency rumble when letting up on the gas

I’m at a loss in discovering the source of a low frequency rumbling sound coming from the rear of my ‘31 Slant sedan, when I let up on the gas pedal. This is not an engine or exhaust noise. I have checked/adjusted the tailpipe muffler clamp several times, so I don’t think that is the source...

What is that slight whirring sound I hear when the clutch pedal is pressed?

I took my Model A out for the first time this season a few days ago, and heard for the first time, a subtle but noticeable whirring or light spinning sound when the clutch pedal was pressed in. Is this something to be concerned about? (I know that I greased the throw-out bearing via the grease...

"Ford's Garage" Restaurants in Ft Myers, FL

I plan to visit Ft Myers in FL soon, and wonder if visiting one of the three Ford Model A "themed" restaurants, called "Ford's Garage", might be fun. Have any fordbarners been there or visited the Henry Ford estate in Ft Myers? Thanks.

How much oil do I add when changing the oil?

My dipstick marks are gone and I am wondering if I have been adding the right amount of engine oil. Under the assumption that the oil pan drip-tray holds some oil, after draining the oil pan for an oil change, I've been adding exactly 4 quarts of oil. Is that the correct amount for a 1931...

    Occasionally starved for fuel

I welcome advice in solving my intermittent fuel starvation problem. My car occasionally "dies" while cruising, whereby I coast off to the side of the road and inspect. Confirming that I have spark, I get back in the car and it typically starts and I drive off. This intermittent problem has...

Is it unusual for a Rex-A-Co water temp gauge to fail?

Approximately two years ago, I purchased a Rex-A-Co water temp gauge from Bratton's and it has suddenly failed. I was riding in my car yesterday and suddenly the temp reading began to drop from 180 degrees to the lowest point on the gauge and has not registered since. I've checked both ends and...

Is it OK that my engine oil is "black" after only 500 miles?

I am very good at changing my oil at 500 miles, and use Rotella 15W-40, but I'm wondering why the oil appears to be so black in color when I drain it? My engine has about 15,000 miles on it's rebuild, is very clean inside, the babbits are all good and "gapped" properly. The spark plugs...

Who is attending the New England Region Mode A Ford meet on Long Island, New York?

I plan to attend the NE Region Meet being sponsored by the Model A Ford Club of Long Island (http://www.freewebs.com/modela/), being held 11-14 September 2014, and was wondering how many other fordbarners will be there. I understand that so far, more than 135 Model A's will be there.

What is a cure/treatment for squeaky fan belt?

My fan belt squeaks a bit when the car is idling, and the belt is not too tight, and it has a couple of thousand miles on it. I wonder what treatment I can use to minimize the squeak? Might rubbing some parafin on the sides of the belt help? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

    original vs modern points/condenser

I know this has been discussed many times, but I am still confused on which is better, original or modern points/condenser. (Also, for some reason I cannot get the Search function to work this morning on fordbarn, when I tried to research previous posts on this subject.) While many people...

A different spark and gas rod question

I occasionally have problems with the spark and/or gas rods. Sometimes one of spring loaded ends or caps somehow lets the spring come out of the back. To me, it appears that the crimped on caps are not really crimped enough to prohibit the spring from coming out. I have bought these rods from...

    What causes dirty ignition points?

I would like to know what causes dirty points? Also, how often should they be checked and cleaned? I discovered dirty points when timing my engine via the light bulb procedure outlined by Les Andrews' Vol 1. At first I could not get the light to go out when the points were closed! Upon...

    Idling a bit rough suddenly.

My Slant has begun to idle a bit rough in the last week or so. The car runs fine and does not stall out, but the idle is suddenly not as smooth as it used to be. Is it an electrical or fuel problem; of course, that is the question! I checked the points gap and it is fine. I have an "A&L"...

    1930-31 Period-correct Headlight "Visors"

I am looking for a pair of period-correct headlight visors, (or old repros) with real glass indicator lenses for my '31 Model A. (I do not like the more modern headlight visors currently offered by the vendors, which have "hoods" which are too big, and also use "plastic" jewel lenses.) Thank you.

Anyone have experience with Archoil 9100 Boron-based friction reducer?

I would like to know who may have added Archoil 9100 friction reducer to the Model A engine, transmission, and/or rear end. (Supposedly the additive ratio is 1.2 oz of Archoil 9100 for each quart of crankcase oil, and the Boron-based liquid sticks to friction surfaces.) I have heard from the...

How tight should the fan belt be?

I know this is a tough question without a single "correct" answer that everyone will agree upon, and I hope that responders are not too cruel to me, but: How tight should the fan belt be? Does it differ whether the belt is driving an alternator or generator? I realize too tight might put too...

What is the best way to install/seal valve cover?

I have a leaking valve cover, and have tried several times to fix it with a new paper gasket and also tried a cork gasket, with and without using gasketing sealer (Permatex number 2). It still leaks oil, out of the bottom left half of the cover where the cover meets the block, and there are no...
