A different spark and gas rod question

I occasionally have problems with the spark and/or gas rods.
Sometimes one of spring loaded ends or caps somehow lets the spring come out of the back. To me, it appears that the crimped on caps are not really crimped enough to prohibit the spring from coming out.
I have bought these rods from both Snyder's and A & L, and they appear to be of the same quality. Are there better rods available somewhere?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

How worn are the balls they fit onto?
Do use grease in the connections? I sure see a lot of dry connections, but like all the other moving parts on the car, they need lubrication.

Pat, I have both the original & a repro rod. The originals have a 1/16" crimped "collar" at the end of the spring loaded cap, whereas the repro does not have any collar at all, but only crimped into a round "end" on the steel rod. I have not seen a reproduction made like the original. I'll bet the spring in the repro's isn't the same either. Try to find original rods if you can. Best, Pete.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, the rod ends and the "balls" they are attached to are greased, and the balls are in excellent condition. I am convinced the repro rods are poorly made, out of aluminum, and they ends simply are not crimped enough to stop the springs from popping out. I wonder if Bert's in Denver can sell me "original" gas and spark rods?

Call Alan at A & L and explain the problem. If nothing else he will replace his product if it is of poor quality.
