Miller head water pump leak

I have my father’s Model A with a Denver Miller Hi-speed Head from 1988. It has a four bolt pump that was supplied with the head. The water pump shaft is dripping at the multi-notched packing nut.

I started by tightening the packing nut less than half a turn, and it made no difference. Then I found the original instruction sheet that came with the head. It says “…grease rear fitting only. The front fitting is for original appearance only as the double ball bearing are sealed.” There is a threaded brass grease fitting at the rear, so I will figure a way to inject some grease into this port, but does it seem correct that there is NO packing to replace inside the packing nut? Thanks, David

Thanks for reading and replies. When I started this project, Steve Serr provided missing head gasket, other gaskets and expert help.

Since posting my question, I kept searching the archives from my parent's estate and found the water pump diagram! Attached in case it could help anyone else.

I started by lubricating the back of the pump and it made a significant improvement. If I need to rebuild, looks like I now have the info I need.

Does anyone know who took over the Denver Miller project after Art Inama and about what year it might have been?

Was it Steve Serr or was there someone in between?

As I remember Art Inama was building them in 1976 or 1977 when I was building my first B block with full oil pressure and "C" crank ... but I am not sure when he stopped doing them.

I have correspondences between my father and Art Inama dated April 1988. My father was in the process of purchasing a Miller kit. Art wrote that he had shipped 15 units at that time. After 1988, I do not have any info.

Art Inama passed away in about 1989 or so. Many of the tooling was sold to Steve Serr, who saw problems with them and discarded most of them and made his own. We bought much of his stock of extra parts, and still sell some and sold off some to others over the years.
