Harmon collins help needed at bubbas

BUBBAS IGNITION

Well-known member
Need some help on the Harmon Collins distributor for the flathead. I have done quite a few of these with little reference to the actual firing order.
We rebuild the unit, and sync each set of contacts on a syncograph with eight lights making sure the lights line up evenly etc. Never actually runing one on a car...
I am aware it uses a different firing order when you use twin ignition coils, caps and rotor etc.

Someone have the correct litature for the Harmon Collins firing order .???

Thanks

The crab caps that Bob Drake is selling in his latest catalog will work on H&C, however, the cylinder numbers molded on the outside of the cap would not be in the correct order for H&C but those numbers could be removed or over labeled to avoid confusion.

I have a Harmon Collins that has the original cap numbered different than the ford cap. It's packed for Hershey or I'd take a picture.

The original Ford cabs are numbered, on the drivers side, 1 5 6 2. and on the passenger side 8 1 3 4.

I learned today that on the H&C Dual coil they should be, reading top to bottom 2 8 4 7 on drivers and 6 1 3 5 on passenger side.

If you find information different than this please let me know.

Got a part number on the acctual part your refering to JM??

It is the crab cap shown in his latest catalogs. I bought one and it does work on my H&C dual coil, dual point distributor but some of the cylinder numbers will be incorrect for H&C.

I think the No.1 coil would have to fire 1, 4, 6, & 7 cylinders and the No.5 coil would have to fire 5, 8, 3, & 2 to keep the engine order of 1, 5, 4, 8, 6, 3, 7, 2. Each coil fires every other cap terminal in one rotation. No1 coil starts with No. 1 cylinder terminal and the No.5 coil starts just behind it in sequence with No. 5 cylinder terminal on the other side of the cap.

That link in Bruce's previous post #2 has a picture of a renumbered cap that should be correct for anti-clockwise rotation (viewed from the front) with the No.1 cylinder plug wire located at the approx 10 O'clock location. Passenger side top to bottom 8, 1, 3, 4 and driver side top to bottom 7, 5, 6, 2. At least it works in theory. We will have to see a Harmon Collins cap to verify.

With this cap terminal order there will only be 1 crossover wire per side. That wouldn't be too bad to keep it dressed fairly decently.

Hope this comes out with my junk camera. Top tp bottom drivers side 7562 pass side 8134.

Somewhere in a box in an attic is the motherload of rotors for these babys.............

I got my engine running today thanks to an old timer who knows his stuff. The order is from top to bottom on the drivers side 7, 5, 6, 2 and on the passenger side it is 8, 1, 3, 4.

Thanks Chris for the correct firing order.....
I will add a timing sheet with the ones i have on the shelf........

This looks settled, but as soon as I can bring it in I will post an olde Don Francisco article covering this, the 59A conversion, Kong, LZ-V8, and a dozen others, PLUS a general rule for figgerin' it out on anything he may have missed! Took me a while to find it, and none of my HC stuff had a real HC cap.
