Ok. Can I pull it right out to clean it up?

The oil filler tube has worked loose at the base on my 29 Sedan and started to weep oil. How is this fixed in normally? Thanks

I had exactly the same problem with my 29 Sedan last month. Turned out to be the oil pump drive gear A-6551. The gear was spinning on the shaft causing the timing to slip every time I started her up. It can be removed easily through the valve cover.

Problem solved! Sure enough the gear on the end of the shaft is spinning freely. New one ordered so hopefully back on the road in a few days. Thanks again for your invaluable help and advice.

I'll take the valve cover off in the morning and report back, thanks guys.

JBill, yes I can turn the gear at the very bottom of the distributor shaft quite easily all the way around not just an eigth or so!! So where is the 2 piece drive shaft, inside the valve cover?

Thanks Bob, do they fail very often? Les Andrews manual mentions little ever goes wrong with the oil pump but can't think of anything else that would cause the timing to slip?

Pulled the distributor, shaft and couplings look ok and rotor arm is good. If insert a screw driver in to the drive shaft slot I can turn it with only a slight resistance and no movement from the engine, ie timing mark dosesn't move. Is that right? What couples the end of the distributor...

Had a look today. The packing had pushed out the front of the packing nut towards the fan. Span the packing nut out and popped the packing back in.There is a rubber 'O' ring behind the nut which starts to squeeze out as I re-tighten, so I guess its tightend just enough to stop it leaking water?

Greased the water pump today and the grease pushed the seal out of the housing closer to the head which has now started to leak! Took the grease nipple out and tried to tap the seal back in but still leaks. Anything to be done to cure?

I will take some pics in the morning. The sliders sound good but I'm in the UK so shipping will make them even more expensive!!

Hi Ed, yes that's the same. Smoke has improved already. The extended tube is just a temporary fix and if it's still smoking after a few hundred miles use will strip it down over the coming winter.

Latest update, tracked down a set of baffles and a bottle of Marvel Mystery oil here in the UK! Planning on putting a couple of hundred miles on the clock over the next few weeks and will see if smoke improves. In the meantime I came up with a plan (see pics below) to distribute the smoke...
