    Y-Block 292

Wow, lots of good information here! I think that I will go the easy route first. i.e. Checking & retorquing the head bolts. Then if the water leak comes back later, I will pull the heads and check & replace the head gaskets. I'll stay with the original 256 if I can. I'm not looking for more...

    Y-Block 292

Who can tell me if there is any difference between a Ford or Mercury 292 c.i. engine. Maybe identical except for the I.D. number? And will the 292 bolt right in as a replacement for my '54 Mercury 256 c.i. motor? Reason for asking: my 256 motor developed a water leak somewhere in the back close...

54 runs hot at low RPM or sitting still

DMFSRR, I am using an aftermarket gauge with it's sensor installed in the same location in the engine as the original factory temp gauge. Scott

54 runs hot at low RPM or sitting still

I've got a 54 (Merc) 256 c.i. that runs cool (160 degrees) above 40 MPH but 190-200 traveling 20 MPH or less. Here is what I've done in more or less chronological order. 1. Had the radiator re-cored with 4-row core. 2. Added 6-blade fan. 3. Rebuilt the engine. 4. tried 180 & 160 thermostats...

    54 Mercury floor shift conversion

I resorted to EBay and found a guy with the ID there of 4ever4d named Mike who had bought out a Hurst dealer back in the 70's and had the conversion kit I needed. It was a tight fit, especially since my Merc is a convertible with the X frame. I had to cut a small notch in the frame for clearance.

    Brake booster bad

I don't know what part of the country you're located in. Midwest Booster is near Chicago, Booster Dewey is out west. Both are good. You can find them is Hemmings Motor News.

    54 Mercury Steering Column Wiring

Eureka (as the old philosopher said) I have found it! It was a dual problem that Leprechaun Murphy put on me. Testing for power at the junction block from the turn signal circuit, I found none and tracked down a blown fuse which necessitated removing my air conditioning unit and radio to get at...

    54 Mercury Steering Column Wiring

All of my Mercury's wiring has been replaced except for the column harness. I will check out the suppliers that you provided and see what they have. I had tried the regular Ford/Mercury suppliers but they didn't have the column harness. Thanks, Scott

    54 Mercury Steering Column Wiring

I have converted my '54 Mercury from manual to power steering (necessitating a change to floor shift) and am having trouble getting the lights and turn signals working. All of the wires that run through the steering column have faded so the color codes in my wiring diagram are no help. I put...

    54 Mercury floor shift conversion

Thanks Jeff, I'll give that a try. Late in the day so I sent them an Email inquiry. If I don't get a response, I'll call them Monday. Scott

    54 Mercury floor shift conversion

I'm in the process of converting my 54 Mercury conv. to power steering but there is no way to get the manual column shift to work. This is due to the power steering gearbox being longer than the manual box. Also, my steering conversion kit is made for 52-56 Fords. Fords have an external shift...

    1957 Fairlane Power Steering Conversion

The Borgeson unit is a good fit unless you want an original system with the slave cylinder. Some of those show up on EBay now and then. Check out Summit or Jegs; I think they have the parts needed to go with the Borgeson unit. A little alteration of the steering column required if you have a...

Can you weld an exhaust manifold to repair it?

I agree with the guys that have advised you about arc (Stick) welding. I have pre-heated manifolds in my outdoor propane grill. My best results have been obtained using welding rod with high nickel content. Putting the part in sand helps to cool the part slowly. I don't weld parts frequently and...

    Manual to Power Steering Conversion

Thanks for your offer; I visited butchboy (see above) and got some parts from him. I'll let you know if I need anything else. Right now, it appears that the supplier sent me the wrong gearbox so I have to resolve that before continuing this project! Scott

Butch, I'll give you a call tomorrow(Tuesday), I'd like to see your Edsel and I'm definitely interested in the floor shifter. Thanks for your reply. Scott

    Manual to Power Steering Conversion

I am in the process of a project to convert my manual steering system to a modern style (No Slave Cylinder) power steering. First of all, I need to say that it's a Mercury (54) not a Ford and therein lies my problem. The problem is with the manual column shift levers. I'm using what's known as a...

    '54 Ford/Mercury Power Steering Conversion

I have found a company that makes a power steering gearbox to convert Y-Block Fords & Mercs from manual steering to power steering without using the problematic, leaky slave cylinder like the factory set-up. It's manufactured by a company named Borgeson and sold through Summit Racing. It appears...

    12V starter change

I had a shop rebuild & convert my 6V starter to 12V after a couple of years. However, I think that the bendix still hits too hard. I'm not sure exactly what they did to convert it to 12V so that's why I thought I might try a '56 or later starter if one will fit.
