12V starter change

Does anyone know if a '56 or later 12 volt starter will fit a '54 mercury that has been converted to 12V?

It will make the bendix hit harder than it does on 6v shortening its life somewhat. How long it will last depends on its present condition.

My 55 was converted to 12 volts by the previous owner. I bought it in 1996,and it gets used regularly. I did replace the drive once in all those years.

I had a shop rebuild & convert my 6V starter to 12V after a couple of years. However, I think that the bendix still hits too hard. I'm not sure exactly what they did to convert it to 12V so that's why I thought I might try a '56 or later starter if one will fit.

A bit more expensive, but the mini high torque starters work great.
