    Model A Luggage Trunk?

Good morning all. I found this recently and was looking for a little info on the year and value of it. The tag on the right bottom side says it was made in San Francisco by W.R. Malm. Any info would be appreciated. Darol

Did I find the oil leak?

Howdy all. We bought a 31 coupe a couple weeks ago and took it for it's first ride yesterday. After about 5 miles, I opened the hood to check things and found oil all over the place. Checked the level and it was down a quart. After doing a little investigating, I found this bolt missing. Will...

    Oil on radiator??

We just bought this 31 A coupe and noticed the oil at the lower end of the radiator. It doesn't appear that there's any oil leaks up front to cause this. Has anyone experienced this before?

    Our first one is done

After many months of reading every day here on the Barn and patiently working through it, we finally got'r done. I want to thank everybody so much for all the help over the months and a special thanks to Walt for pulling us out of the ditch several times.:o Couldn't have done it without the Barn...

    Ford Barn tee shirts

I just watched Walt's class on oiling of the flathead that was taped at his shop a couple years ago, which was great. Anyway, I noticed he had a FB tee shirt on. If they're still available, I'd love to buy a couple.

Fuel pump rod and pump issue

I have a 47 Merc block with the 8ba rotating system. I bought the 59ab pump rod that's 8 7/8 long and when I installed the pump housing and pump, I noticed the rod doesn't make it up to the pump lever. I'm guessing that either there's a shorter housing or I need another pump????? I have the cast...

    Post distributor/59ab heads

How does a post distributor mount with 59ab heads?
  10. D

Was wondering what this little thing is for.

This is a 47 Merc to the best of my knowledge. This little part of the pan is on the front right of the pan and has a 3/8 wide and 1 1/2 inch high open slot in it. What is it for?

    Oil pump gasket

I didn't receive the gasket for my oil pumps 4 bolt cap with the gasket set. I noticed the old one was very thin, like paper. I was going make one and was curious how critical it is for the thickness it should be and what material to use? I've got drawers full of gasket material, but nothing...

    Torque spec's??

I have a 1948 '59' motor that has a 8ba rotating system in it with the later distributor also. Somewhere I read that they did this on a 48 1/2 model. There is some differences in the torque spec's between 48 and 49. Which one should I be following on this motor?

    Castle nuts and correct torque

An old question I'm sure, but I'll run it by once again. After getting the correct torque on the mains, I noticed that some holes for the wire don't line up. I did a search here and found this from a few years back. Would I be good to go with Kurt's post? This is a 1948 '59' block...

    Rear seal question

While assembling my motor, I've read that it's a good idea to soak the rear seal in oil for at least 1/2 hour prior to installing it. When I opened the gasket set, I noticed that the seal was coated in something white and don't remember seeing them done like that before. Anyway, I followed...

    Piston question

Well, I'm finally getting back to this rebuild and have a question on the pistons. This motor is a 1948, 59a with a 8ba rotating system in it. The cylinders are stock/standard 3 3/16th as are the pistons. When I disassembled it, I did notice that there were two pistons unlike the others. They...

    Choice of oil pumps

I'm getting ready for reassembly and was reading in Frank Oddo's Flathead Book that it's better to use the short shaft/later pump. He says it creates more oil pressure. The short pump in the picture does have the angled/helical gears in it. It also says that I'll have to buy a short bodied...

    Days before adjustable lifters

I realize that to be able to adjust the lifters is superior to the old way, but I am curious just how it was done with the grinding method. I'm sure there's several here that have done it that way and I'd love to hear how it was done. Darol

Puzzled on which bearings to buy

A while back, we established that I have a 46-48 (59) flathead. Now I'm looking for the bearings for it and have found confusing listings. Some say they have bearings for 39-48, while others have 48-53. Can you guys clear this up for me? That is if I happened to have a 48.

Help on year parts to buy

Howdy all. Great place, a treasure trove of information. I'm gonna jump right in with a question about this motor. On both the intake and heads (water ports in front) it reads 8rt which I gather is from a truck. (painted blue) The bell housing is part of the block cast, yet it has the newer...
