Help on year parts to buy

Howdy all. Great place, a treasure trove of information. I'm gonna jump right in with a question about this motor. On both the intake and heads (water ports in front) it reads 8rt which I gather is from a truck. (painted blue) The bell housing is part of the block cast, yet it has the newer distributor shaft off to the right. From what I've been reading, when the new distributor came, it also came with the bolt on bell housing.

Either I've missed something, which I can understand, or they did something different in the second half of 48 ???? I'll post pictures if needed.

By all means, post pictures.
Although the 8RT came out in '48 as an 8ba style block it should have a separate bell housing.

Likely you have an early block with later parts added, as so much stuff interchanges on these flatheads

To cover all possibilities...manifold deck surface, front of block, lower sides/pan rails, and bell area. If there is a 59 on the bell, you can skip all that as the '46-48 59 block became the universal replacement engine and the most common early FH.
From 1939-53, pretty much everything can be interchanged between years with only minor trickery and parts choice. What will it be going into?

So would I be right then that water pumps will cross over between 37-48 and 49-53? The pumps that came off of this motor show to be 49-53.

This thing is stripped to bare block to get boiled out. What would you like a picture of?
At least Front, Rear, top and side of the whole block.

The pump you show appears to be off 49'-53' passenger car not F1.
The stock F1 pump would look like this--

Here's some pictures of it. This motor isn't from the 52 F-1. I found it in a field under a car hood. It does have the big truck pan on it.

The pump was confusing to me too. It shows it's for a 49-53 car, but it came on, I'm assuming, a 48 engine??? It has the single wide pulley on it.

'46-48 for sure, when you look at the late pump you will see a top hole that does not match your block. You can either use early pumps and other front stuff, or use the late setup and plug that hole.

Still confused. From the images in the link here, and sorry, I couldn't get it here without the link, the one at bottom right is what I have on this motor, but they're saying its for 49 and later. The one at top right and left is what they say should be with my motor but it won't fit or is it that it will work if I plug the hole? I apologize if I'm missing something simple here.

It's 46-48 block. If your going to use the engine in and early 48 or older car and use that up top dist , you need the 8BA truck pump, it has the legs for the donut mounts and the pulley is out 3 in. so the belt will clear the dist. Also plug the small water hole on top of the back of the pump. Walt
