    Failing gas tank sealant

Question: How effective are pencil-style fuel screens when your gas tank sealant is failing and shedding flakes? (see attachment of screen) Situation: My gas tank was boiled and sealed less than ten years ago. This was a competent job by a well-known local shop. But, ethanol has done its work...

    Knocking after installing new flywheel

I just installed a new stock flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch. Now I get a clicking sound when depressing the clutch petal. The clicking intensifies to a full knock when I press harder. Once it starts knocking, it continues even if I release the clutch petal. The click sounds like it is once...

    U-joint Play

There is about 1/8 inch play in the four shaft ends of my U-joint. And, the shafts are no longer round. (see attached pic) I'm thinking it's time to retire. Your thoughts? And don't laugh. :)

    Reshaping my creased fender

I started a whole new thread for reshaping my creased fender because the previous thread was a question of using MAPP gas. After reading the responses, I decided not to use heat. I got the feeling that would not work well for me, as a newbie. Previous thread...

Dent and crease removal with MAPP gas?

Can you use MAPP gas to remove a nasty crease in a fender? See attachments. My fender was bent backwards, which left a deep crease. I wondered if I could use a Berzomatic MAPP gas torch to heat it up and bang it back into shape. I do not have oxy acetylene, or a dolly, or any professional...

    Hub seal orientation

I want to verify the rear hub seal (and rear inner axle seal) orientation before pressing them in. I believe the seals are oriented with the metal spring toward the grease. My attached photo shows the outsides of the seals, oriented away from the grease, true? Can anyone confirm?

    Rear wheel bearing play

How much play should each roller in the rear wheel roller bearing have? I didn't measure, but it looks 1/16" of an inch. I can grab rollers and move them around quite a bit. Two rollers can be pulled together so their outer surfaces touch. Every roller rattles when I shake the whole bearing...

    It's not always the clutch

FYI, if you release the clutch pedal and nothing happens, the clutch is not always at fault. Especially if the vehicle suddenly drops a foot and your rear wheel bounces past you. You might have snapped a rear axle! I'm expecting to have to pull the rear end, and rebuild with new axles. But I...

    Who is Jack Bahm?

YouTube keeps recommending Model A videos by some guy named Jack Bahm, so I watch a few... and every time I come back, YouTube suggests some more... and I watch those... and... I may be hooked! :) Thank you, Jack. Are you on fordbarn? https://www.youtube.com/user/jackbahm/

    My New Stump Puller

Bought this old ruster last year, and am just getting around to posting pics. :) It’s not exactly farm fresh anymore. I’ve posted a bunch of pics on various Facebook pages. The previous owner fixed it up, and now I am too. There are a bunch of farmer fixes and wrong parts. But I love...

    Preparing to remove studs

Is there a way to prepare rusted-in head and manifold studs for removal while still driving the car? Sorry for the dumb question... I want to eventually pull the head and manifold on an old tired engine, and I know those studs are rusted in because I've been working for a month to pull the...

    Front Wheel Bearing Play

I wanted to perform the test below, as described in the Service Bulletins, page 203. But now I have a question: Where should the cold chisel be placed? Does the photo show it in the right place?

    National Fordbarn Tour

Would anyone be interested in a National Fordbarn tour? I would! Here are some ideas that came to mind. This would be a picnic and tour, held in 12-15 different locations on the same day. Call it a “national tour” or “world-wide tour,” but there would actually be many regional tours all...

    Burlington vs Reconditioned Crank

I’m considering an engine rebuild and would like to understand the advantages of a new Burlington crank over a reconditioned one with counterweights added. Cost is not a consideration. I understand the cranks will be similar and I might not feel a difference while driving the car. But beyond...

    1929 Coupe Rear Wheel Carrier

I probably don't even need to ask... but is this rear wheel carrier a repro? 1929 Sport Coupe. Did all the rear wheel carriers use pressed lugs and normal lug nuts? Not removable bolts, right? The RG&JS illustration seems to suggest this but it does not specify.

    The New Ford

The Ford marketing department has asked members of fordbarn to come up with marketing text to promote the new Ford. Here is the image they'll use and some sample text. My first response is below. The new Ford is just the car for adventure! THE value of sound design, good materials, and sporty...

    Battery discharged through ignition coil

Can any permanent damage occur if the battery is allowed to completely discharge through the ignition coil? For me, this has happened accidently because I turn off the gas valve and allow the engine to use up all the fuel in the carb before putting it away for the night. I have, on occasion...

    My New Tools

For general interest... Here is a set of Model A tools I collected for my March 1929 Sport Coupe. Aren't they cool? Thanks go out to Don Turley and Gary Johnson for help in identifying the correct items. I also built this box based on Don's design. Hope he doesn't want a royalty. :) Still...
