    Coil hood spring replacment?

The "coil spring" on the passenger side on the 53 Merc is weak and thus the hood holds up about half way and when shut the hood I have to push that side down snug at the cowl. Is there an adjustment or do I have to replace it....maybe both while I'm at it? If so, what are we talking here? Don

gas tank straps for 53 Merc?

Looking for gas tank straps for the 53 Merc Monterey....no luck anywhere. Ebay, Macs, on and on. Is there a set that works on another vehicle that will work on the Merc?

Had it with the Teapot carb! Argggg.....

So after a $400 carb rebuild and my mechanic doing his best to try and dial the carb in, and of course checking all other possibilities causing the under-par performance, with the new flathead engine, I'm tossing in the towel on the teapot. The manifold is a square 4 bolt mount, so I'll need...

    Manual choke install

How hard is it to install a manual choke? Seems fairly simple. I'm overriding the auto choke on the 53 Merc. It's not doing what it's supposed to and actually interfering with the normal operation of the engine. I know there are guys who rebuild them, and I'll eventually get to that, but for now...

    Upgrading to a different carb/intake?

OK.....I've just about had it with the original double barrel "teapot" carb set up on the 53 flathead V-8. It's been nothing but a headache even after a complete rebuild. The difficulty getting it "dialed in" to idle smooth, the ever-reoccurring hesitation underway, and coupled with the...

    adjusting jets on a Teapot

Rebuilt engine with a rebuilt Teapot two barrel. Still a tad rough idle.....messing with the two gas/air jets and the idle screw. Is there a magic formula here? All the way in easy, 1 and 1/4 out on the two jets and setting a decent idle. She smoothes out if I set the idle high enough, but I...

    Weak Wiper problem solved!

Well folks, the guy who rebuilt the flathead was right. The PVC valve I installed was robbing the wipers of vacuum. I pulled the PVC hose off the "T" where is fed into the vacuum that fed the wipers, the power brakes, etc. and started the car up.......and sure enough, the wipers work like new...

Car runs great without oil bath air cleaner.

Hmmmm.....I took the 53 out to the PO this morning and forgot to install the huge oil bath air cleaner and low and behold, she didn't hesitate like she has since I got the car. I was quite surprised. I did clean that filament on the air cleaner, new oil like they said, not over flow just what's...

    Vacuum wipers barely work

The vacuum wipers on the 53 Merc barely work. They worked better before the engine overhaul and teapot rebuild. I really think I have a leak somewhere and why I cannot get this car to run a smooth as I want. There is no consistency to this cars ability to idle right or without some kind of...

Is there an adjustment to auto-chokes?

My auto-choke seems to be a tad high at start-up, so I have to give the pedal a quick pump to settle it down to a slower pace while warming up. One the car does warm, the auto-choke does ramp the idle down to normal. Is there a way to keep the auto-choke from racing at start up? BTW.....you...

Installing new 6 volt coil quandary

Removing the old "Flame Thrower" coil and installing the new Flame Thrower, I ran into a mystery. The old coil was connected with the positive post running to a grounded nut on the radiator frame while the negative post ran to the distributor and then a wire running to the ignition out of the...

    Keeping hub caps on

I've had the front hubcaps come flying off more than once when I hit a bump. Bent the 'teeth" out a tad after sharpening them for a better bite on the rim, used double sided Gorilla Tape on the hub where the cap edge contacts the rim. So far they are holding but do loosen up after a drive. Any...

    Chasing down the allusive stumble

Got the 53 Merc engine back all rebuilt. Had the teapot Holly rebuilt. Checked the vacuum including the distributor vacuum advance. Electronic ignition. New plugs. Still a slight stumble when taking off at a start, all warmed up. I've heard the teapots even rebuilt are finicky devils, but I...

Best plug wire set & coil for 53 merc v8?

Looking to replace the wires and coil on the 53 Merc 255 cu. V8. I like the color of the ones on the car now (orange/red?) Want to replace the coil as well so any info on where to find these two items and specs, would help. Don

    Lost clip......

Of course, while moving the small rod on the carb ( I believe the accelerator pump) attempting to put the tiny clip back on it went "ping" into the great unknown! :mad:The pic shows the small hair-pin clip. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement and the size of this little guy? Don

    53 engine rebuild is done!

It took awhile (since mid August) but the complete rebuild of the 53 flatty V-8 is now done! She purrs like a sleeping tiger and looks brand new. There were a few glitches along the way, such as repairing the usual cracks, some pinning, but nothing that would jeopardize the the block integrity...

    Engine hood insulation

Most of my old cars and trucks were lacking that insulation attached on the underside of the hood in the engine bay. The 53 is also missing that. Is it necessary and if so, where do you get it, and how is it attached? Thanks.... Don

    which booster to buy?

So here are two links to boosters for the 53. Western Chassis on their power brake booster kit looks like the exact same kit on eBay with a big difference in shipping fees. The problem I have with the eBay booster is that it says it won't work on my 53 Merc in the details, when you enter the...

Adding power brakes to the 53

I briefly asked this question a while back, but never followed through. My 53 Merc was not equipped with power brakes and I was wondering if a booster kit would improve the reliability in stopping these old heavy cars. I'm not real confident in the old single master set up, as we all know what...

    Steering wheel spinners

Folks, the 53 has "Armstrong steering".....what my pop called it before power steering. I've never used a suicide knob on any of my old trucks and cars, but some say they help in turning the wheels of these vehicles. Any thoughts? Don
