Engine hood insulation

Most of my old cars and trucks were lacking that insulation attached on the underside of the hood in the engine bay. The 53 is also missing that. Is it necessary and if so, where do you get it, and how is it attached? Thanks....

Most had none but they did use a waffle pattern treated cardboard to act as an anti squeek between the outer skin and the hinge mounting structure on some cars. I don't know about the 53 models though. My experience is with the 1951 Mercs.

My '53 had one for a six cyl about 1" thick spun glass type insulation- similar to modern building insulation and it was glued to the hood. V8 used a different pattern. Have seen them listed in the Old days in catalogs. Newc
