No drive to banjo?

Is it possible the ujoint is not engaged, or barely so?
Keeeef did you say you had this problem before changing the trans out? If so, my vote goes to a broken axle.

Splines are known to wear. Even with the pin in place, they can take a "hammering" to the point that the spline on the driveshaft, on the pinion or in the coupling get so thin that they can fail. (I have a beautiful 3.54 ring and pinion set, but the splines on the pinion are just about gone.)

A broken axle was very common years ago.
If you jack up left side under power it should turn, If it doesn't turn I would guess your right axle is gone.
Same thing other side.
If they both don't turn under power , As others have said it must be broken drive shaft. I would go with broken axle first. Good Luck

Keef, if you grab the axle shafts they will pull straight out of the axle housing if broken.

Mart.

Mart, the keys weren't sheered but the left side axle is moving like a **** in a bucket as we say in England!! Can't pull it right out but is very loose.

Currently having trouble undoing the bolt that goes through the wishbone to release the torque tube, left it soaking in oil for a couple of hours!

A lot of in and out movement or radial?

Radial isn't unusual because the bearing is in the hub.

Mart.

Movement seems to be radial, can't pull it out. Torque tube now removed, front and rear splines look fine.

Must be something broken inside axle I guess. Run out of time this evening, will investigate further tomorrow.

It is unlikely that one of the driveshaft pins out would allow the driveshaft to move enough to come out of cosmo. Believe you have a axle key shot.

Keeeef, if you do not have brake drum retainers installed, the axle may be broken and bunged up enough to be stuck in the inner bearing

If the driveshaft/torque tube has been shortened, the weld on the driveshaft could have let go. The whole thing needs to come apart and everything checked.( You can take one axle housing off and take both axles, carrier and ring gear out as a unit.)

Before I dismantle the axle I just wanted to show a couple of pics ot the keys.

Lots of Barners saying check for broken keys and as I have never seen a broken one I imagined they would be in several pieces. Although the key in the pics is in one piece I can see wear marks/scratches across them and was wondering if it could be slipping inside the hub. I did have some trouble removing the hub.

What do you think?

Those keys look fairly normal, but the radial grooves indicate past problems. On a new axle that area is smooth to mate with the hub.
When the axle nuts are torqued properly, the hubs ARE hard to get off because the hub is driven due to friction on the taper NOT the key. Using a KR Wilson puller is the best way to accomplish that removal task.
When you remove the rear end, make sure the U joint is not broken. If I understand everything you have described something must be amiss with the driveshaft itself. IF that was a 32 rear end with the pinion held on with a nut and key, I would suspect that. I see from your picture though that it is a 6 spline pinion and driveline.
Let us know what you find! Good luck, I hope it is something simple.

the pic he posted was not his pinion

U/J,splines, pinion and pin look fine. I have the axle and torque tube out of the truck on the ground just wanted to check the keys are ok before I go any further.
