Wow, that is indeed ugly. Must have made some pretty horrible noises.
Since you are rebuilding the rear end and it is apart, have the axles magged, especially the keyways. Don't forget to replace the small seals inside the small end of the axle housings. ( When I was 14 and stupid, I thought that gear oil was supposed to get out there to lube the wheel bearings!)
