Square nut vs Hex nut...which one is it?

Doug, I had forgotten about the Briggs bodies as they had so much other stuff to deal with to get the tanks out. Rod

Guess the 28-29 cars and trucks are a rairity.

So from what I gather here...All the FORD bodies had the "square" nuts and the Briggs and Murray bodies had the "hex" nut assemblies?

Thanks to all who contrubuted to this post.

PLUCK...I went to Marco for the answer as we were not getting what we needed and as stated above by Marco that is correct. The 29 Roadster used SQUARE NUTS...thanks to all that chimed in to help on this topic.....Question completed.;)

Now that was fun...Is it stated anywhere in the Judging Standards as to this fact? I could not find it.

And I agree, found no where at all that it is stated...I think it should be included but that is actually in area 1 engine as fire wall encompasses that area also.

My car is stamped 2-6-29 on firewall. It is a briggs body leatherback.

Bolts and nuts are hex on firewall and gastank support structures internally. I am pretty sure they are original. Bill G

I thought we added it to Area-1 and was very frustrated to discover otherwise. I went back through drafts dating back to 2007 and nothing. I discarded drafts earlier than that so I'll never know if we forgot or it was inadvertently dropped/lost.

One thing I will point out. When you are doing research, writing, reviewing, and reformatting for clarification, it is MUCH easier to find or spot what's incorrect than it is to discover what's missing!

Yes i agree and no that is not in area 1..but thanks for all the help this weekend, greatly appreciated as always Marco!:D

My 60-A with gas tank date 6-7-28 (otherwise appears to be pre-November 1928) has hex nuts on both rows of 8 bolts however the round head screws at the top flange of the cowl use square nuts. It appears to be unmolested but I cannot guarantee that.

Can someone who has known original bolts (screws) with the hex nuts on the firewall and on the interior side of the gas tank of a '28-'29 Briggs please let me know what the height of the heads and nuts are?

Have you checked with Mick Isbell book, it does have ALL that info for you....
I also think they are what this thread it about..1/2-20 x 5/8th

1929 Station Wagon in the shop that last ran 40 years ago, tank date is 6-28-29 so that is June, 26, 1929 with the Murray tag on the lower right front door area and another original tag with number under the seat, a VERY nice car, has NEX nuts on the firewall to tank, connection. Nex nuts on the inner side clamps. But if you need to ponder something at 3:00 in the morning the bolts under the windsheild have Square nuts. Bob

OMG  now we have Nex nuts as a third choice?

This has been a great thread...wish all "research orientated" threads were like this.

Mark and I thank all who helped out.

And Thank You Mike.

STEVE ........................
There should be enough original factory photos around to prove or disprove any theory.
MIKE :)

Regarding the picture posted by Seaslugs, should the nuts for the tank to cowl go to the bottom? The pic below is from a very original 28 untouched right hand drive Roadster still showing it's original paint work. The nuts in question are on the bottom.
Any ideas folks?

I'd bet someone changed them to upside down over the years.:)
