Square nut vs Hex nut...which one is it?

Guys and gals...need some help here please...

On the firewall side of the 28-29 Model A/AA's, there is a row of eight bolts, nuts and lockwashers.

We (Mark and myself) are trying to determine if in fact if "hex" nuts were used at any time within the 28-29 production year.

I know that the 28-29 Parts Price Lists indicate a "square" nut but not a "hex" nut.

So, if you would be so kind to check your original, unmolested 28-29 vehicles OR restored IF YOU ARE CERTAIN THAT THE NUTS REPLACED IN THAT AREA WERE THE ONES YOU TOOK OFF IN THE BEGINING, and please tell us if they are "square" or "hex" nuts.

Please, if you know for certain, tell us the aproximate month of production.

As for me:

February 1929 Tudor: Square nuts
February 1929 Special Coupe: Square nuts
September 1929 Standard Coupe: Square nuts
October 1929 CCPU Body: Square nuts

Thanks and may the "nuts" land where they may!

Are these the same bolts and nuts Ford used to attach the front fenders to the splash aprons? If so are they also the same ones he used on 1926-27 fenders? Bob

Yes...difference being is that the fender bolts (A-20557) were Cad plated and the gas tank bolts (A-20538) were not according to the Parts Price List BUT were the same size.

NOW the nuts are different...fenders were "hex" nuts BUT THE GAS TANK WERE SQUARE NUTS according to the Parts Price Lists.

Were the nuts on your 29 Station Wagon "Hex" or "Square"?

As far as the 26-27 "T" fender usage...the PPL's says "Same as T-4865" for A-20538 bolt but not for A20557 bolt. So I guess the "T" bolts were not Cad Plated?

March 29 as i found, square nuts

My 9-27-28 Phaeton has square nuts on the firewall side and hex nuts on the two cowl tank ends. My 2-23-29 Tudor has the same.

I thought Mark was asking about the 4 nuts on each tank end where it clamps to the cowl?

Even the early 30 AA cowl I have has the square nuts on it. Every 28-29 gas tank I have removed has had the square nuts. I am sure they are correct. Rod

Pluck, as I posted on Mark's thread:

July 17, 1929 Tudor — square nuts

I am technically the third owner of this car, but I bought it from the second owner after he had had it for only three weeks, and it was stored in a barn by the original (first) owner for nine years before that (1952-1961). So I am pretty certain they are the original nuts. Car was assembled in Portland, Oregon.

On the Ford bodies, I have also seen that the height of the 3/8" hex head bolts on the firewall are slightly higher than the 3/8" fender bolts.

Were the tanks installed BEFORE or AFTER the bodies were painted, did Ford mask the plated nuts and bolts? Bob

Seaslug, first time I've ever seen the tank/firewall bolts come up from the bottom. Bob
yea i dont know what to tel ya. im sure its been taken apart before as my great grandpa used it on the road for 20 years and engine has been bored out a few times (not original engine) so who knows what could have happened

Guess the 28-29 cars and trucks are a rairity.

So from what I gather here...All the FORD bodies had the "square" nuts and the Briggs and Murray bodies had the "hex" nut assemblies?

Thanks to all who contrubuted to this post.

Gary,
They look the same too me....but, I didn't measure them.
I'll do that tonight.

# A 352,XXX, hex on the top, square on the bottom.

Briggs used a combination of both. Square nuts on the slotted stove bolts around the tank at the top of the cowl. The firewall centre piece is bolted in with hex cap screws using a special size and hex nut configuration
