Ebay Bidding...What the heck here...

Never ever bid on an item until 5 seconds before it closes. Anything you bid prior to that will be raised by other inexperienced bidders. Get yourself a bidding program like bidnapper, bidmaster, ETC.

PLuck, If someone bids against you then it tells them in a small box window how much they have to enter to outbid your max. It’s kinda confusing.....
...?

I think you are the one that's confused. Nowhere does Ebay tell you what someones max bid is.

I got outbid at the last second on a pickup I really wanted to buy and was the high bidder on for several days. Ever since then I have used this site to do my eBay bidding.

http://www.esnipe.com/

It works great !

As far as the shipping, many times it is inflated to take care of the eBay/PayPal fees which usually ding the seller for 20% of the total sale.

Here is another site to use. Does not cost anything. It is called "Qixen".

eBay had some major issues the past few days.. all my wife's auctions were deleted (she makes soap) and 2 days later some re-appeared. Maybe it's somehow related...

$25 bux for UPS ground?!?!? I hate it when sellers squeeze more money from buyers by pumping up shipping costs.. you could ship that anywhere in the country for 15 bux US Postal and get it it two days...
As far as the shipping cost I just had this happen to me as an Ebay seller. I list all my items United States only but lately a lot of foreign buyers are bidding anyway, this time the winning bidder was from the Netherlands, surprising because the item was a very heavy 35-41 Ford flywheel. I had intended the item would go UPS which usually is more at the counter than the estimated or calculated tables Ebay and UPS provide. Lately I add a couple pounds and also dimensions of box and most time still isn't enough for UPS changing prices they always attribute to fuel cost. Unbelievably UPS wanted over $425.00 to ship from Ohio to Netherlands, flywheel weighed 42lbs. I thought it would be to big and heavy for USPS but I took it in anyway, filled out the customs form and they said it could go Priority mail for $140.00,flywheel itself was only $50.00. Problem is PayPal takes their fee and most of it was from the shipping cost so lost again! Haven't looked at total Ebay charges on it yet.Bottom line in the future I am going to have to get smarter and inflate shipping charges from buyers even more to try to break even, and also get lighter parts to sell.

Well, Well, Well...I won the auction.

I would like to thank all of you who chimed in to help me, and hopefully some of you other guys and gals out there, who may have learned something about Ebay bidding.

I had $275.00 on it but got it for $242.49 which included the shipping. That completes the Great Northern set I have been working on for quite some time now.

Now for that Union Pacific Steam Engine.

Thanks again!

Pluck

Was this the pickup?

No that would be nice, but it was a 1959 Dodge with low miles and original paint that was used by a cemetery to haul grave markers, so it looked like a five year old truck. Got out bid in the last few seconds.

Phat rat, you are right..... as well as a lurker. I stand corrected, not in the shadows awaiting to be right and not help someone with questions.

How are you helping when you give incorrect information? As far as being a lurker I was here a long time ago way before Ryan took it over. Somehow I got lost in the change or whatever

That's OK, as long as your bid was the most you wanted to pay. I also snipe almost on everything I buy and I too get outbid by another sniper in the last couple seconds. I lost the bid, but that was all I wanted to pay, so I just keep looking.:)

If you don't want overseas/out of country bidders, it's easy to set your preferences up so that they are blocked (as in totally) from bidding. In the event that you do this and later agree to allow a blocked bidder access to bidding, it is easy to give that one bidder the OK.

PLuck, I hope you understand what the guys are telling you, the current bid reflects the amount plus one dollar that you over bid the last high bidder. It doesn't post what your max bid is. If someone bids against you then it tells them in a small box window how much they have to enter to outbid your max. It’s kinda confusing.....

I explain it this way;

I go to an auction house with 1000.00 dollars in my pocket. I find something I want. I know my max bid will be what is in my pocket. The bidding starts with a minimum amount but I don't yell out the amount I have in my pocket. I place a bid for the minimum and wait to see what happens. If I'm out bid, I bid again the amount the auctioneer calls out to beat the other guy. This continues hoping to get it for the least amount of money out of my pocket as possible. If the bidding goes above what I have in my pocket I stop.

Now for ebay, I tell them what I have "in my pocket" as a max amount. The bidding starts at the minimum. If someone out bids me ebay reaches in "my pocket" and raises the bid by the amount amount the "auctioneer" calls out until the item sells or my "pocket" is empty.

I want to know why ebay bids down to the cents. A bid will go from $5.00 to $7.23. Are people really bidding cents?

Yes! If the amount to increase the bid is $1.00, and last bid is 5.00. if you and another both have a max of $6.00 the person who put the bid in first wins. if you bid 6.01, you win and save .99. ;)
