What Model A Engine is this?

Gar, in the Model A Judging Standards, Copyright 1981, on page 1-1 at bottom Right, it says.

"Quote" Most cylinder heads had no Ford script and few, if any markings. Ford script heads are acceptable through mid 1928 only. After mid-1928, Model A cylinder heads had no numbers or letters on them. Other after market heads will appear identical to the factory original heads, except they may have raised bosses with numbers or letters. "End Quote"

Ford was real touchy about someone using the Ford name on after market parts. A good friend of mine who lived in Omaha, Mel Alexander also told me that those heads were Model A AR. So if that ford script is not Early AR, what do the Early AR's look like, as that head is the only Model A head style I have seen with Ford script. If I am mistaken, I would like to find out, I am going to keep digging in my Model A books, and see what I can find, give me some help Guys, see what you can find. thanks Gar, Herm.

Diamond blocks are date coded and the diamond heads are also date coded. If the head is a diamond head then the tag on top would indicate Mar 12, 1937 manufacture. This date would also be consistent with the large oil filler tube in the block which appears on other diamond engines. The judging standards deal with era production practices but Ford script on post production replacement parts is not uncommon. An early script head would not be date coded so post production service part would seem likely. Generally early script is quite large where service parts have small script as shown on this head.

That makes sense Jerry, so does any one have a picture, or an example of a Model A AR Ford script head we could see, there has to be alot of AR boys out there. thanks Jerry, Herm.

I don't have an early head but did just check another small script head. It has the date above the water pump mounting like this head and the diamond opposite it below the pump mounting. This head has Made in USA below the Ford script.

Would diamond blocks have an "A" in front of the serial number? And the serial number is about 20,000 units higher then the last production number of 4,849,340 in March 1932. Are there any production/date figures for diamond blocks?

My 1928 AR Roadster head does not have a Ford script on it. The assembly date is 6-8-28 on the gas tank, the engine number matches the serial number on the frame and is correct for that date.

I'm still a novice when it comes to Model A's, but the head looks like any other Model A head to me.

looks like orig painted yellow should'nt it be green if model a auto
lots of things happen in 80 years. after block was hot tanked before a rebuild, they could paint the bare metal as they wished, even yellow (ugh!)

the Ford green paint is long gone from the engine in our MARC of Originality Coupe, even though it has likely never been removed from the car.

March 28 was when Ford removed script from parts. As they were used up they would appear on some parts on some cars sometime later. I would not expect many to still appear in June.
