I figure the early hot rod crowd was looking for best performance off the line to as high an rpm as it would go. The LZ ****** gears with a 4.11 or 4.44:1 rear axle ratio would do that pretty well but the top end would have a lower speed unless there was some kind of overdrive. The engine RPM will be up there too with a 4.11:1 rear ratio or higher at 70 MPH down the highway. Gas milage would not be as good with higher rpms
Now days folks are looking for higher cruise speeds with lower engine RPM for quiet and efficient milage running. Especially if you like to go on long distance runs. For mostly around town driving at lower speeds the LZ combo would be OK. In mountain country a higher number rear axle ratio is better for climbing hills. As most folks mention, it's all about application and how a person likes to drive.
