Zephyr Gears

I figure the early hot rod crowd was looking for best performance off the line to as high an rpm as it would go. The LZ ****** gears with a 4.11 or 4.44:1 rear axle ratio would do that pretty well but the top end would have a lower speed unless there was some kind of overdrive. The engine RPM will be up there too with a 4.11:1 rear ratio or higher at 70 MPH down the highway. Gas milage would not be as good with higher rpms

Now days folks are looking for higher cruise speeds with lower engine RPM for quiet and efficient milage running. Especially if you like to go on long distance runs. For mostly around town driving at lower speeds the LZ combo would be OK. In mountain country a higher number rear axle ratio is better for climbing hills. As most folks mention, it's all about application and how a person likes to drive.

instead of selling them , why not buy more! Buy when you can, not when you have to. I grew up learning to drive in a 36 pickup with 26 tooth LZ gears backed up by a Columbia and the 4:11's in town with the LZ's were just super for street racing. I was still pulling far ahead in 2nd with more to go when the guy I was racing was loosing ground shifting into high gear. Love'em SIR DUCE

I discovered my 32 5W has 25 LZ and a 3.54 rear. It had the 21 tooth speedo gear so I never knew how fast I was going. I followed some folk to run and wondered if they were going slow for me. They werent. I truly love the gears. I have a 274 and it goes up my steep driveway in second just fine. No problem taking off. A 60 chevy with a 283 came stock with a 2.48 first gear and a 3.36 rear and they took off just fine at 3900 lbs. My 5W goes like a rabbit.

26 tooth zephs, 3:78 rear, Columbia od, 8.90X16 dirt track Firestones. Deuce hiboy with 100% stock 51 ford engine (n.o.s. until this build) with S.Co.T blower. Great combination for what I wanted. I love to run flattys around town in 2nd gear just to listen to them. The tall 2nd gear and tall tires fit the bill. On the freeway in 3rd overdrive at 65 mph it feels a little "luggy" . The tires are strictly for looks. If I wanted to have better acceleration I would probably drop down to 6.50 rear tires. But I'm reasonably certain that I can wax most flatheads that I might find running around town. (not that I have encountered any lately!)

Definitely put in a set of 25 tooth Zephers, YOU will love them even more. How come you don't install a nice lopey track cam with an alum flywheel? lol
