Y Block Oil Pump Question

In the pipe to the oil pan, up through the block to the oil filter, then into the side oiler galley. Some people have had trouble getting the oil pump off. Two bolts up from the bottom, and one down from the top hidden under the crud build up.

don

you're saying 'steel pipe' on outside connects

oil passage from pickup to oil pump?

you better believe i'm going to be

REAL careful taking that external line off!:)

i think a real Y Block guy has 1 or 2 spare ones on hand!:)

Just loosen the big nut on the pipe, then loosen the nut where it goes in to the pan, and the oil pump will come down and off. The nut on the pan only has to loosen 1/2 turn. When re-assembling it, dont overtighten the nut goung in to the pump. You are only compressing the rubber.

don

why, that steel tubing certainly does

go into the side of the oilpan!:)

amazing what you see when

you have the time to take a good look and

that's the only thing on your mind!:)

at assembly time should have manual from Forel

and be all up to speed on this '64 292.

Heed what Don sez about not over tightening the nut going into the pump. You may crush the pipe causing an air leak which in turn will cause the pump to cavitate.

I've got a question on the pipe going into the pump...on my 312, the nut holding the pipe to the pump was loose and it was misting oil every where. Once I figured out that nut was loose I tightened it but reading the above posts has me concerned. I didn't "kill" it when I tightened it but I snugged it up good. Is there anything I should check to make sure I didn't over tighten it???

Also, what sort of oil pressure should a y-block have? I have a mechanical oil pressure guage and it reads 40 psi while driving but drops down to 20 psi when idling (once the engine is warm). Is this ok?

volt

40 psi when engine is cruising

sounds good.

20 psi at idle at at idle is good too.

you can check with Ted Eaton or

John Mummert and see what oil

pressure fresh rebuilds have.

that's fresh rebuild STOCK with STOCK oil pump.

DO NOT do anything goofy like put in

high pressure spring to increase oil pressure.

just thought i'd head off 'kook's' before

they tell you that!:)

Have A Nice Day!

hi volt

about oil pump 'pickup external extension'.

see what manual says first, if you don't

have one get manual on CD from Forel.

you should take it apart again and

look it over while you're thinking about it.

that's just a little 'insurance', it sounds like it's ok.

I almost hate to admit it, but I tighten that nut with a water pump pliers. If you got yours really tight, it should be OK, but you may not be able to re-use the rubber swadge gasket underneath the nut. Your OP sounds OK. I use 15W40 Rotella during the summer, and mine is 60-65 cold, 40 to 45 on the road, and about 20 to 30 at idle. My rockers are pressurized.

Thank you guys!

I hope I didn't hijack the tread.

Guess I need to research how to pressurize the rockers. I know I've seen it mentioned before.
