What is this for?

My car is a 29 Tudor. On the edge of the rear floor between the door opening and the front of the rear seat support there is a hole. There is one on both sides. It doesn’t line up with anything on the underside of the car. Any idea what this hole is for or what it is used for? See the attached image. I have looked in all of my books but have not seen anything about this hole.

Hello,
Early 28 and possibly into early 29 splash aprons were differently shaped. the hole you have in the floor frame was for a carriage-type (with a flattish head) bolt with a spacer block that held the apron up towards the body. Forward of the hole, the apron was bolted to the frame as usually seen.
The top edge tapered to the rear of the hole, clear of the frame. The several pairs of these I've had were for the early service brakes only cars and had no hump above the rear part
of the running board for the brake rod spring. No separate emergency brake rods or drums.
The judging standards have an Early 28 section that refers to the running board section 13, that describes the early aprons and the attaching hole in the floor as you describe. Other features are described which can help give an accurate age of the car and may answer any future questions you may have.

My Tudor is March 1928, and has the holes too. Changes were made all the time. For me I never give it any thought.

As is the case with many products, there are producibility changes made to aide in fabrication & assembly. Also, there is the case of forgings and castings that are dependent on the pattern maker's best efforts. As patterns wear-out, new ones are made by various artisans. Sometimes these producibility changes vary from plant to plant, and in many instances the changes do not get incorporated into the engineering drawings.

If I want to “plug” them what should I do? I was thinking to put a 1/4” bolt with a square nut? Do nothing? Any thoughts?
