Well, it finally happened.

Hi Patrick,

I got rear ended years ago, (thankfully with no injury, except for a bit of whip lash), in 1962 by a car driven 80 mph while we were stopped; & in 1979 by a car driven 70 mph while I was going 25 mph after I saw the drunk coming.

After studying the vulnerability of my wood body 1930 Town Sedan, I provided extra LED rear lights & LED turn signals.

On my Town Sedan I presently have:

A. Right & left LED tail/brake lights in lieu of regular 6V tail/brake light bulbs; &,

B. An LED 3rd brake light mounted at the bottom of my rear window; &,

C. Immediately under my metal trunk I have three (3) individual LED motorcycle running light fixtures, each about 3" wide by 1-1/2" high with three (3) small round bulbs in each fixture, for a total of nine (9) extremely visible protruding round bulbs which come on with the headlights to augment the regular running lights.

D. When I apply the brakes, the (2) LED tail lights get much brighter, the LED third light in the rear window comes on, & three (3) of the small but extremely bright LED lights under the trunk blink on & off.

I had my oldest son follow me one night after installing same.

He said the blinking lights "really" caught his attention because it appeared to resemble blinking light on a fire truck, or on an emergency vehicle, or on a deputy's patrol car.

I think a steel trailer hitch rear bumper is next, with LED turn signals mounted further rearward on the steel rear bumper.

Someone had posted an old photo of a Model A Sedan, (maybe a Tudor), some time ago that was rear ended ............ it was not a good sight to see ........ in lieu of the Sedan's entire chassis being pushed forward by the collision, the back seat & rear spare tire appeared to have been pushed forward almost to where the front seat was "formally" located, thus being dangerous for everyone in the vehicle.

But like you mentioned, with my luck, I'll probably could next get T-Boned by the same guy that rammed your vehicle.

Locally, within the past (2) years, we had (2) separate old ladies in a parking lot drive "completely" through the exterior walls of (2) different libraries located 10 miles apart -- both placed the cars in drive instead of reverse & gave it the gas.

Speaking of modern iron, I think a trailer hitch is one of the cheapest protections you can have on a car. We got rear ended two years ago, the 1/2" thick steel on the hitch got bent and had to be replaced but the only thing wrong with the Toyota Highlander was the bumper cover. The other vehicle was darn near totaled, hood, radiator, bumper, etc. and she was probably going only 25 mph, we were stopped at a light. A cop was at the intersection and saw the whole thing.

My story is a little different. I rear ended a car with my 31 coupe. It did no damage to the coupe but left the impression of the bumper clamp on the car that I hit. I told the young driver that I was insured and he should get his car checked and fixed. The young man said he didn't care as his car was junk. (I though it was a nice car a fairly new Chrysler) it was my fault and I wanted to do the right thing. We shook Hands and parted. I guess that's karma as once I was rear ended and the damage to my car was very little that I let the person go to.

Cell phone/texting usage while driving is banned in Illinois. But, you'd never know it. Few people pay any attention to the law anyway.

Retired now, don't have to drive somewhere everyday BUT the little driving I do I see more and more close calls and outright IDIOTS on the roads today, many more than say even 10 years ago. Last week I was on a four lane highway and some guy swerved into my lane to whip around a guy in front of him turning right. Ran me off the road I layed on my horn while I was trying to avoid HIM hitting ME. Just beside him and a little behind.

For all of that he gave ME the finger:confused: and drove on down the road.

I posted the following message on the HAMB a couple years back and I feel it applies here:

In addition to the insurance fixing the car there really needs to be something along the lines of an "Immediate Satisfaction Law".............you smash my car doing something idiotic (like yammering away on your cell phone while you should be paying attention to the road) and I'm entitled to one free swing (bat, golf club, tire iron or similar weapon(s) allowed depending on the severity of damage) without repercussion.

Hi Patrick, sorry to hear of your mishap, I hope the doors open and shut ok, as you know they are pretty sensitive to frame alignment. I also have a 30 std. roadster so check things out well including the bell housing for cracks.

May suggest using the baseball bat as ramrod to install the cell phone somewere were the sun don't shine? Bob
