Hi Patrick,
I got rear ended years ago, (thankfully with no injury, except for a bit of whip lash), in 1962 by a car driven 80 mph while we were stopped; & in 1979 by a car driven 70 mph while I was going 25 mph after I saw the drunk coming.
After studying the vulnerability of my wood body 1930 Town Sedan, I provided extra LED rear lights & LED turn signals.
On my Town Sedan I presently have:
A. Right & left LED tail/brake lights in lieu of regular 6V tail/brake light bulbs; &,
B. An LED 3rd brake light mounted at the bottom of my rear window; &,
C. Immediately under my metal trunk I have three (3) individual LED motorcycle running light fixtures, each about 3" wide by 1-1/2" high with three (3) small round bulbs in each fixture, for a total of nine (9) extremely visible protruding round bulbs which come on with the headlights to augment the regular running lights.
D. When I apply the brakes, the (2) LED tail lights get much brighter, the LED third light in the rear window comes on, & three (3) of the small but extremely bright LED lights under the trunk blink on & off.
I had my oldest son follow me one night after installing same.
He said the blinking lights "really" caught his attention because it appeared to resemble blinking light on a fire truck, or on an emergency vehicle, or on a deputy's patrol car.
I think a steel trailer hitch rear bumper is next, with LED turn signals mounted further rearward on the steel rear bumper.
Someone had posted an old photo of a Model A Sedan, (maybe a Tudor), some time ago that was rear ended ............ it was not a good sight to see ........ in lieu of the Sedan's entire chassis being pushed forward by the collision, the back seat & rear spare tire appeared to have been pushed forward almost to where the front seat was "formally" located, thus being dangerous for everyone in the vehicle.
But like you mentioned, with my luck, I'll probably could next get T-Boned by the same guy that rammed your vehicle.
Locally, within the past (2) years, we had (2) separate old ladies in a parking lot drive "completely" through the exterior walls of (2) different libraries located 10 miles apart -- both placed the cars in drive instead of reverse & gave it the gas.
