Water pump not pumping

Ok I've searched every where for something on this and can't find anything. My brand new pump isn't pumping at all. I bought it because my old pump wasn't pumping either. Are the fins supposed to be butted up against that little ring in the head? Mine have 1/8 inch of clearance it's like the button is to long. Can I shave that down?

Can you turn the pump with the fan blade when the fan belt is not installed (don't put a lot of force on the fan blade and damage it, the pump should spin easily). You should be able to spin it with your hand.

Maybe the woodruff key isn't in place on the water pump shaft. This would allow the fan to turn but not the shaft and impeller. The only other possibility would be that the impeller isn't not turning . Neither is likely. What makes you think that the pump isn't pumping ?

The key is good and shaft is turning, is there a thermostat behind the elbow on the side of the engine? I don't have an "in hose" thermostat.

Sorry I didn't see that message, It is over heating so I took the top hose off let everything settle then cranked the engine. The level stayed the same in the radiator and the top neck on the block with the engine running .

You should buy the locking collar for the front of the shaft. It will control the end play to a few thousanths.

I'm still trying to figure out how you figure your old pump and this pump aren't pumping the coolant? If the impeller turns, it pumps. If you fill the radiator to just above the baffle plate, then rev the engine, you should see the coolant moving quite a bit.

Well I took the top hose off of the radiator, left it on the top neck on the head/pump. Then filled the radiator until water came out that top hose. Then cranked the engine. No water was moved or pumped out at all. I might be doing my test wrong but I figured it would pump water out of the engine until the radiator ran dry.

You DID have the fan belt on and snug...........right?:confused:

I just don't see how it couldn't pump water everywhere with the top hose removed.

When you say you "cranked the engine" did you just crank it
with the starter or did you actually start the engine??

Lol yes the fan belt is snug. But you said rev the engine, does it have to be revved for the pump to pump? I think I tried that with the old pump.

Do you have a picture of your old pump? Something just doesn't makes sense here. Even at idle, the water pump should push the water out the top with the hose off.

Ok update. I just put some washers behind the impeller to put the fins closer to the head. And instead of trying it with the hose off did it the way Mr. Tom said to and I over filled it a little. But with it revved I can tell it's got some circulation to it. I just drove it for probably 15 mins and it's barely got a drip with small bit of steam. But it's doing WAY better than it was. I don't have a way of checking the temp and my headlights don't work so I can't really drive anymore tonight. Tomorrow I'm going to put a nail in my overflow and get a temp gun. I'll let y'all know what I find out, but I think my problem is the head is worn really bad and I'm sure my multiple washers will cause problems down the road but for now it may be fixed?? Lol
