Virtual end of magazines

I let my membership lapse in both clubs a few years back, primarily joining to get the magazines in the beginning.

Most National Meets are too far away and working too many hours it's hard to get away for any length of time without the s*** hitting the fan back at the office.

I don't need a club to enjoy my cars, but the fact remains clubs do have their place.

AS one after another quit the ink and paper business, and I see in the news that SI will be doing so soon.......

Model A News is going to cheaper and thinner paper for the cover and content.

I don't care for all of it but I guess that is the way it is. The Model A publications that you get in the mail and can hold in your hand are still preffered at least at my house. They are the main reason for belonging to the Natl. Clubs. Outside of the bi-monthly mag the common guy doesn't really benefit that much from belonging.

Guess I'll just hang onto my issues and keep re-reading them like I do Ford Life. 50 plus years of The Restorer makes a heck of a lot of good reading. If it goes to too cheap of paper or on-line only I will have to quit the clubs. Sorry.
Hello Jeff, This has been a trend for a long time. My family has been in the Printing and Bindery business for over 100 years [5 genarations] and it is diffently being taken over by the digital market. When I started in 1970 the industry said then that we would be a paperless society by the year 2000. Well that did not happen. In fact as a nation we now use more paper than ever because of the computer. Go figure.

I believe that those who can hang on and ride it out will swing back on top.
I get irritated when I read online news and those damn ads pop up. MSNBC, CNN, etc...... I'm back to newspapers.
It'll be similar with some magazines too. Mags have ads, but they're not irritating like mosquitos

John,

If you use Firefox on your computer, add the "ad-block plus'' add on. It will eliminate all those ads!

I just recieved a note from Street Rodder ... 3 years for $30. that's 80% off their subscription rate. Guess they need numbers again.

I used to subscribe to 15-20 different magazines every year. Most got dropped. When you get a magazine that's more advertising than articles, it's time to cut it loose.

Rod & Custom is guilty of this as is Street Rodder. The AACA magazine has turned into a yuppie stiff necked production, but that club & magazine is for another thread, another time.

I used to subscribe to Hemming's Classic Car and that's one of the few that is a really good publication. I don't subscribe anymore, but I usually pick one up at the bookstore if there's good articles relevant to my interests.

Cars & Parts used to be outstanding. As a kid in the 1980s, I subscribed to it for years, now it's been combined with some other magazine.

I personally like the new acca mag. I guess that makes me a stiff neck yuppy. I'm 35, I guess I fit right in. Although I feel like a child at some of their shows. Nice articles, nice pictures - pretty classy.

Newspaper sales are falling here. U can get the news, sport, betting, dating, finance/shares, opinions, ads and anything else the paper has online and it is updated all the time.
In the future there may be a small market for print. Possibly for older folks, who knows?
My kids can't be bothered with newspapers. Anything they want they get online!

I didn't mean to imply that anyone who reads it is a stiff neck yuppie, just the format smacks of yuppieness.

BTW- I'm 32 and know very well the same feeling you experience at shows! :)

"Is that your dad's car?" LOL

I guess I'm old fashioned. I still prefer to hold a newspaper or magazine in my hands. There's nothing like holding my favorite magazines, such as the Restorer, Antique Automobile and Turning Wheels (Studebaker Club), plus a few more. A computer screen can't duplicate the quality of the photos in the mags.
I hope I don't see the day that magazines dissappear.

I am dreading the day that I have to put a computer in the bathroom.

May I suggest an internet tablet such as the Samsung Galaxy or Archos 70. They each have a 7 inch screen and make an excellant way of transporting all your reading material to the porcelain pot. Also you leave nothing behind such as the newspaper or magazines that you have not completed:D There is one draw back however, if you find yourself without TP it is very awkward to wipe with the tablet:rolleyes:

I enjoy the magazines, but to be quite honest I like the Fordbarn better. It is daily, there is always something new, and I feel like I know the people who post even though I have never met them. Plus I get to participate. If it is a choice give me the computer.

How will the union members know when to go inside when it rains. They lay a newspaper out and when they get x number of drops per minute on the paper, it's down tools and head inside.

i as well enjoy holding onto and collecting my restorer and model a news magazine.they do take up a lot of room but its worth it.hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

I get a lot of push to take the Model A Times into a digital format but have avoided it so far. I guess I like the idea of holding something in my hands too.

The initial post by Jeff did not provide all the information. MARC for some time has received more articles than they can print in an issue, therefore by going to a slightly thinner paper (most members probably will not notice the change) MARC will save MARC about $600 per issue and allow the page count to increase to 72 pages. Thereby giving the membership more articles, i.e.. more of what they are asking for.

I read an online newspaper for the headlines but still buy a daily and usually read every small article in it. With the exception of the club magazines I am down to one other magazine. Not that I dropped them just that they stopped publishing a paper copy. I would not subscribe to any print paper or magazine for more than a year. Odds they will keep publishing are to slim and I have lost money in the past.
