What's the best source for vintage license plates? I'd love to have a 1931 Missouri or Kansas plate for the Model A.

I have been checking ebay regularly, hoping to find one.
I thought I was lucky awhile back when I found a Louisiana '29. But when I went back later to check it's status. It had been removed....D'OH!

Antique License Plate 101 - When you find it, BUY IT!

Keep in Mind - you have to use year of manufacture tags from the state you live in, from your avatar, that being Kansas. Unless you also have a home in Missouri where you could register a Missouri tag, you can't register a Missouri tag in Kansas.

Something happenend while I was typing and I couldn't finish my post. Anyway, I keep the current plates under the seat or somewhere inside the cars and run YOM plates without tags. I've been followed by cops many times but never been stopped. I think the law knows there is a law re. YOM plates, but they don't know what it is. Have any of you guys ever been stopped to check your tags?

My dad got personalized plates that say, "EDS31", but I was curious about the vintage ones. I didn't know it was legal to actually drive with vintage plates.

Apparently KANSAS permits YOM plates.

(c) In lieu of the license plate issued under subsection (a), a person who owns an antique vehicle who wants to display a model year license plate on the vehicle shall make application in a manner prescribed by the director of vehicles, including the execution of an affidavit setting forth that the model year license plate the person wants to display on the person's antique vehicle is a legible and serviceable license plate that originally was issued by this state. Except for license plates issued prior to 1921, such license plate shall be inscribed with the date of the year corresponding to the model year when the vehicle was manufactured. For license plates issued prior to 1921, such license plate shall be the license plate issued by the state corresponding to the model year when the vehicle was manufactured. Duplicate numbers for any year shall not be allowed for any model year license plate under the provisions of this subsection. The model year license plate fee shall be $40.
(d) In addition to the license plates authorized under subsection (a) or (c), a person who owns an antique vehicle may display a model year license plate originally issued by the state of Kansas on the front of an antique vehicle. Except for license plates issued prior to 1921, such license plate shall be inscribed with the date of the year corresponding to the model year when the vehicle was manufactured. For license plates issued prior to 1921, such license plate shall be the license plate issued by the state corresponding to the model year when the vehicle was manufactured

In Virginia you can use YOM plates, but if someone has registered the same number from another year you can't use the plate. I would assume that the same type of rule applies to other states, so make sure you can register the plate before you buy it. Here in VA we are paying $300.00 or so for 1930 or 31 plates, so we generally check before we buy them.

I just stick them on mine and drive, never had a problem
Since YOM Alaska plates (28-31 vintage) are "as scarce as hen's teeth" there are several of us that use "whatever" (YOM from TX, ND, KS, WI, etc) on the front, & the "official" Alaska plate on the rear. The "official" front plate is in the vehicle - just in case, but no one has ever been questioned about it.

Might have to alter that a bit this summer though, since our planned tours take us into Canada.

I have my regular antique plates issued by the state of Illinois and have my vintage plate in the front between the headlights.. The antique plate is on my front bumper and the other is below the stop light..
