upgrading 31 Model A to V-8 ??

I know where a bunch of model a's are. People are going to see real soon how many more are out there. People my grandfathers age are dieing off. And most of their families are not interested in the cars. I say get them on the road how ever you can.

I just did a quick search of Model A's on eBay. There are 143 listed with a few other models mixed in. I have no idea why. One was advertised as a six cylinder but is clearly a four. I didn't count the hot rods as to get a ratio, but there are many.

I can recall the day when the A was the car to restore and own...

There goes another Model A. And you call this "upgrading" ? I prefer to restore and preserve, not destroy. IMO

I followed your coupe build over on the hamb.As i remember it was a "trying" build at times.I think its a great car,and if they don't like yours they definately don't want to see my AV8 coupe:eek: I wish I could offer the op some help but mine wouldn't apply

Thanks .. Mine was a pain .. But well worth it. There is days I wish I has the banger, but then I lay my foot into it, hear the charger start to whistle , and that thought is long gone ...
I was married in the model a when it was stock and I wouldn't change that. But it's more fun now

If you join the H.A.M.B. make sure you do an"introduction" BEFORE your first posting or the forum police will flame you. Lots of good info there (as well as here) but you do have to put up with some Adam Henrys on the H.A.M.B. IMO.

We have an annual art deco parade of vintage cars here, and Model A's make up some 30 percent of the vehicles. There's so many of them it's a case of "oh darn, here comes another"..... however, when I hit the road in my AV8 I see folks just about driving off the road while gawking at it. People wave at me, they dont do that to stock restored A's. My point is... to heck with the naysayers, there's gazillions of restored ones, do what you want with it.

The V8 engine and trans will bolt to your rear end 's torque tube, but you will have to do some fabrication of engine mounts, transmission mounts, find someplace to mount the pedals, and convert the radiator to match the V8 water hoses. Not a hard conversion, and has been done a gazillion times over the decades. Take Pete's offer to talk to him in private messages, he's pretty helpful. And most of us are interested in flathead Ford V8 engines even if they're in other cars.
I would like to disagree with your advice to handle the questions with a PM. Let me start by saying these are general comments and are not directed at the quality of information that you would receive from Pete. When a PM is sent and no one else sees it there is no one to correct any mistakes (and we all make mistakes). If no one sees it the opportunity to look at a suggestion and use it as a stepping-stone to improve it even further is lost. Other posters on the forum that might be interested in the information cannot benefit from it. If the knowledgeable individual has to answer the same question each time he gets a PM he will get tired and we will all lose a source of information.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

You are entitled to your opinion as are all others.
I don't make mistakes. Any info I pass along is proven data. If I don't have hard facts, I keep quiet about the subject and mainly, I don't like people that don't have a clue telling me I'm wrong.
When I tell someone how I did it, I know it works and it's safe. There are thousands of ways to do most jobs and some will work, some won't.
Another thing I don't like about answering on the forum is, too many people like to hi-jack the thread and the poor guy that asked the question is left out in the cold.
Just exactly like what is happening here right now.
You are famous for that.

Pete,

Please accept my apology if you thought I was saying that you were prone to making mistakes as that was not my intention. What I was trying to say is that all people I know, myself included, will make an occasional mistake. If you can honestly say that you have never made a mistake I admire that. I took the liberty of hi-jacking the thread since a statement was made on the thread that I didn't agree with and stating a new thread to comment on it would be, in my opinion, confusing. Again, please accept my apology as it was not my intent to say you were prone to making mistakes and my comments were intended to be generic in nature related only to the rest of us that make an occasional mistake.

I hope to be able to live long enough not to say I never make mistakes.Really......

many many thanks to all of you who have shown support in my endeavor to make this upgrade, yes I still call it an upgrade as that is what it is to me. I have ordered the book from Tardel and I have been given reference to some builds which I must say are awesome. Some of you guys sure know your stuff. I have a lot more research to do and the book to read. I'm leaning toward keeping the truck transmission and installing a 8 inch rear end, just not sure what gear to choose at this time. I'll most likely have a new rad made for the cooling system. I wont be able to do anything on it for at least two weeks . thanks again

Charlie, you definitely do not owe Pete an apology, nor any further explanation.
Pete made a mistake and owes you an apology, but don't hold your breath.

I didn't spend 5 years at college, a couple years at trade school and over 60 years of learning by doing to give away free information to dimwits like you who are too lazy to learn on your own how to do things. I don't have to hide my ID either.
I pick the people I offer information to that I think will use it intelligently
and that does not include you.

Ah, Pete, that's great! Tell you what I'll do for you now...
I'll bump this thread back to the top so everyone can see what an @ss you make of yourself! :D

Ok,
Back to the post....
A V8 flathead and trans will bolt to the axle if you change the calm shells(correct word?) to
4 bolt ones
The fuel pump will be close to the firewall and you may need a lincoln breather fuel pump stand to get it work

I would use an F1 crossmember and pedals, and clutch mechanism for transmission mount
Cheaper than 32 parts

Spilt the wishbones and mount them with the use off the old transmission holes in the frame

Or lenghten them and mount to f1 crossmember

Tightest place is the steering box....
You may try to use a F100 box as i THINK it moves the box closer to the rail

Not a bolt in conversion, but easy to do and well worth it

And yes.get "the"book
