I would think a 54' Merc trunk lid and a 53' Merc trunk lid would be very close, if not the same. This is a 53' Merc trunk lid.

This shows the wire location too.

My 55 Ford Fairlane sedan has and aftermarket trunk light (originally offered by "Coast-to-Coast" stores in the 1960's-'70's). It has a mercury switch inside of it to turn it off when the trunk lid is closed. It is located approximatley where Merc Cruzer's is. The wiring is run inside the trunk substructure and pops out of a factory hole near the corner adjacent to the trunk lid hinge.

That looks much cleaner.

Is the lamp factory, accessory kit or aftermarket?

I absolutely don't know about the 50's ones, but in the 60's up to the 90's most makes offered more than 1 option, probably best to see if anyone has additional mounting instructions. If you can't find under Ford or Mercury, be sure to check Lincoln. Higher priced divisions rarely came as base models. Just thoughts

It is factory and is controlled by the light switch on the dash.

By the HDL SW or an accessory switch?

THANX! for the info.

I was asking the OP as to what lamp he has. If a FORD KIT, it would be on the instruction sheet as to mount.

The headlight switch. See attached wiring diagram.

It only comes on when the headlight are on. I would think you could wire it so it comes on when the running lights are on. I checked on a few more Merc's, of the same year, and they all work the same way.

So all tied to tail lamp circuit including reverse lamps. Oldsmobile did the same up into the 80's last I knew.

You can always wire it hot and put a "Mercury" switch ( that's right, you put a Mercury switch in your Mercury, trunk light circuit) in the line, so it only comes on when the lid is open, like they did later on.

I will admit it took me a long time to figure this one out. Changed the bulb and it never worked. To tell other people that own the same year (52-54) car, how it works, is always interesting.

So, to see in the trunk in the dark, you have to pull the HDL SW?

Ain't that something? I guess if you are abducted and stuffed in the trunk, you needn't have a fear of the dark?

Or you get home from a trip and want to unpack the trunk.

But say you get a flat at night, you might want to leave the lights on, for safety, while you are changing the tire.

Mine doesn't have the under the hood light. It was an option though and the accessories book for 53' Mercury, says it comes on when the hood is opened, so my guess is that it would be a Mercury switch.
