truck gas tank

I did a quick search and didn't find an answer about fittings on a 34 under seat gas tank, I need to remove it and clean it, the truck has been running on an aux side mounted tank and I want to run it on the seat tank again as we're not going to do 300 mile distance trips in a 3 axle 1 1/2 as the orginal owner did, looking at it there is a valve which the main line is hooked to and then a removable lid in the bottom of the tank with two fittings in it capped off, is that for the fuel line and gas gauge,or what are they.

Thanks
Aaron

The original tank had a hydrostatic unit in the bottom of the tank. It had a fitting coming out of it for the gas gauge air line. a fitting for the fuel line to the fuel pump and I believe a vent line. The unit is an inverted version of the top mounted unit on cars. The Ford service bulletins have good drawings of all this and how to service the unit. I believe the first order of business would be to shine a flashlight in the filler hole to see what condition your tank is, rust wise and other. A good cleaning may be in order.

On my 1934 1-1/2 ton, the brass valve on the passenger side is where the gas line attaches. On the drivers side, the hydrostatic unit is attached with 6 1/4 inch bolts. One of the two openings in it is for the gas gauge line and the other is for the tank venting. The vent tube goes to the inside top of the tank where it is open. If this tube is plugged, air cannot get in to the tank to replace the volume of gasoline which is burned and the engine will soon starve out for fuel. The gas gauge line runs over to the passenger side and attaches parallel to the fuel line and they both go side by side up to the engine compartment. On mine I took out the hydrostatic unit to make sure it was clean and that the air vent was not obstructed. The brass valves are readily available at some of the prominent vendors and occasionally on EBay.

OK, Thanks Guys, There is two capped lines at hydrostatic unit and it looks like another hole along side of that, the tank is coming out to clean it and I'll remove the bolt in unit to check it and make a new gasket, this truck doesn't have a gas guage in it but the tank could be from something that did would be my guess, I'll report back once i get ti out.
Thank you.

Looks like the hydrostatic unit is shot, this is in a truck so I doubt I'll ever find one, what have any of you done for a vent as that was part of this unit.

Hey, just wondered. You said 3 axel truck. So this has an aftermarket third axel? Like one of the ones pictured an page 129 of James Wagner's book? Could you post a picture? What brand? Set up? Trailing? Live? dead?

Probably very rate setup.

I'm thinking that gage is same as pickups or cars. I'll check parts book tonight but in the meantime did I say PICTURES?

This truck was built like Johnny Cash 59 AB flatty, orginal truck 4 speed a small Watson 3 spd brownie, the rear axle is a tag with correct brakes and hubs on it, the suspension is home built similar to a Rayco spring 60/40 rocker,17 foot flat bed, good runner it'll run 50/55 with no problem, the gent that built it several years ago ran it from San pablo Ca to Fontana in 2004 for the ATHS annual convention and truck show, took him two days, then he ran it to Brooks Oregon for their annual show, when he passed on a friend of mine bought the truck as it fit his fleet well and its just as Elmer left it, its been running on an aux side mounted gas tank for several years and i want to get the seat tank cleaned and working again as I'm not a fan of the way the electric fuel pump was set up to work,as we're not going to drive long distance with it we'll be Ok on the seat tank.
I just hauled it and that 56 to Plymouth, near Sacramento last weekend for a truck show and am going to Perris ca this weekend with them.
