Transmission

The transmission numbers on top of my transmission are: *18-480978*
I checked on VanPelt's site and it shows this number came in 1934.
My truck is a 1939 with an engine from 1946-1948.
Am I reading this information correctly?
Thanks

Check YOUR number again carefully and make sure you didn't miss ONE digit. The 1939 numbers range includes the number "480978" IF you add a 7th digit in there somewhere. DD

The 1939 number range: 18-4661001 to 18-5210700

You might also check the numbers on your shift tower. They are near the bottom (rear) portion on the raised piece in the middle. There should be two numbers followed by a hyphen and then 4 more. If I read Van Pelt's book correctly, if the first two numbers before the hyphen are "40", the trans is '35 or earlier (the tower is also slanted slightly to the rear) and it has only one detent plug. A "68" for these numbers means that it is a '36-'38 model again with a single detent plug. If you have a number starting with "81A" then it's a '39 or newer (with 2 detent plugs).
Hope this helps.

I did some searching today and found that: The numbers on the transmission and left front frame are the same: *18-4809782*. My motor is a 1946 to 1948. It has numbers on the left front of the block and also numbers under the Intake Manifold. Front left of the block are: KA55948 CAL The numbers hidden under the Intake Manifold are: 50811.
Interestingly, my truck spent almost all of its life in California and I wonder if the block numbers ending in CAL stood for California? Do any of these motor block numbers reveal any information about the engine?
Thanks for everyone's help.
Randy

yep, you left out a number on first post....so it does come out as '39....and trans matches serial number on frame, so original transmission....Mike

I sure did leave out a number. These old eyes have a hard time. Does anyone have any ideas about those numbers on the top front left of the motor block?
Thanks again
Randy

Not sure about your block numbers, but most of these engines have been rebuilt at least once. The rebuilders sometimes riveted a tag to the blocks with rebuild information and sometimes stamped the blocks.
