Trans. Drain

My 31 trans. has a very slow leak, maybe 6-7 drops after a 10 mile drive.
My quest. is will the trans. drain completley or will it stop dripping when it reaches a level below the shaft ?...Kinda like the water level in the rad. when it finds it's level.
When I service it I fill it untill it runs out of the filler hole, is that to much? or should it be maybe an inch below that?
It does not leak when not running. Thanks for any advice.;)

The way I fill my ****** is that if I can stick my finger in the fill hole and touch oil it is full.

I fill the ****** to the fill plug threads as you do.

Where exactly is the leak? If it's leaking at the countershaft rear, then it can leak low enough to do damage.

I cut a square hole in my floorboard on the passenger side and "plated it" with a battery floor board plate under the carpet which makes it REAL EASY to check and fill the ****** without crawling underneath.

It looks like it's leaking from the rear of the trans.
For no more then it is leaking I think I'll just keep checking it for now.
Thank's for the comment's. ;)

Transmissions are notorious for leaking at the two shafts for the cluster and idler gears. You can buy a device from most suppliers that fits over the end of both shafts that will prevent the leak. When the trans is out for overhaul, best to replace both shafts with those that are modifed with O-rings.

You should also check that the vent hole in the tower is not plugged. It is located on the back side of the tower about two inches down from the shifter. If it is plugged pressure can build up in the trans and force oil out from various places. Poke a piece of wire into the hole to clear it.

Tom,

I've heard about the vent hole before and when I examine my shift tower assy I find the area around the ball shaped piece at the top of the tower where the shifter rotates thru the gears is also "vented" to the atmosphere. I don't see how the hole in the tower is important or even needed. What do you think? Bill G
