Timing Gear

 I never mentioned valves, but yes, the valves will both be closed when the timing pin drops into the dimple, as they would have to be on TDC firing. So where am I wrong?
You don't have to use the pin. Just make sure the piston is TDC and the valves are closed. If all is correct, it will run. Don't need the pin.

Both intake and exhaust valves are closed well before TDC while on compression stroke,, so,, if the cylinder is making compression just continue to rotate the crank until the piston is at TDC.. Then you can/could look for the dimple and the rotor position..
If the piston is coming to TDC but not making compression the valves are stating open on exhaust stroke..
It still doesn't take long to check the cam gear and probably should be looked at..
Another possibility could be that this monster has a model B timing cover,, but,, if I remember correctly that would only put the ignition timing about 20º off.. It sounds like this monsters timing is off more than that..
The B thing is why I do it by looking at the piston. I have a B motor in right now with a B cover but I use a Model A distributor so, I timed it by getting the piston at TDC and time the distributor for the A. Starts just like an A.

Since you say it was running good a month ago, I assume the cam gear had to be timed correctly with the crank gear. What happened to give a problem? Did it die suddenly, or did the points cam slip, or.......?

Sometimes if you have a cam gear with an aluminum center it can get loose, but this should be a slow process and will also make noise.

The easyist way to see if the the valve timing has jumped is to watch #1 piston and valves through the spark plug hole. The piston is also at TDC at the point when the exhaust is closing and the intake is opening. This is one revolution of the crank from the top of the compression stroke, and is the "overlap" You should see the exhaust close as the piston reaches the top and the intake open as it goes down. If this happens, the gears have not slipped.
