timing gear noise

I have a newly rebuilt engine[1,000 miles] persistent clack from front of engine. My guess is the spring on the cam in timing gear may not be right or not there. aluminum timing gear,Stipe ib330 cam adj. lifters. anyone have other suggestions or info before I check inside timing gear cover. thank you.

Since it is the Aluminum gear you mentioned it is going to make a lot of noise compared to the original fiber laminated gear that's silent.
The Aluminum is going to resonate but if it's banging then i would pull the front cover and investigate.

First, check your distributor for excessive drag or hard to turn shaft. If this is not the problem, it could be the oli pump with the same problem. Beyond these problems, I wouldn't venture a guess.

Possible worn cam journals. Often this area is not addressed by engine builders. The cam is replaced with new, but the journals in the block are worn.

Those cam shafts (reworked oil pump) can put more pressure on the timing gears you can fit a stronger plunger spring or put some 5/16 washers under the spring or remove it and fit a snuber any of which reduce cam walk

Was the crank gear replaced at the same time as the Aluminum gear was fitted .

They knock if not matched and from the same supplier. Best to use a fiber gear .

You may have the mains bored in the wrong location. That could make to much back lash in the gear teeth. I have seen this more than a few times.

This question is for
Tom Endy What do you do if the cam journals are to big or out of round. They are part of the casting right. Jack

The oil pump and dist. Are rebuilt, the cam was ordered over size and fitted to block, crank pulley one piece. from info received I think it may be from new oil pump and distributor makes sense to me, may just need a few more miles to wear in. Thanks for all the info.

I think that I would look at it or talk to the rebuilder , parts should "fit in" NOT "wear in" never had good luck thinking that

I've never had timing gear noise with aluminum or bronze cam gears.

Hey Purdy,
Second that for sure ! IMO, this is another of those old tales...that should make an exit from this engine. Mine has never made any noise from the first start up ! There are other threads , or used to be, where same tale repeated by those who stated that they never used alum time gear. Properly installed and/or Matched gears also ensure quiet gears...bronze same.
I was kinda hoping that mine alum would whine a little..but it didn't:(.

FWIW...you will hear same tale re: quickchange rr...it ain't so !

Hey Rick, I really like my metal gears, they are silent but I wouldn't mind if it had a little whine. The main thing for me is that I should never have to replace them. I wish that Jim Brierley could come on and help us out. Jim is a fan of metal gears also.

Hey Purdy,
Well, first thing I like about my alum cam gear...is durability. I've been thru fiber gear that gave out. Have not heard/seen an alum that gave out. Probably has happened though. Second thing that I expected, before speaking with Jim B..was whine, as I'd always heard like others had heard...their noisey. Heck I like a little whine noise..as it tells me that I can still hear something..she says it ain't so:eek: ! Finally, in my quest to get some such noise, I now have a set of jewelry quality bronze timey with match crank gear. Gad their tooo purty to hide in an engine:) ! The beauty of having a Jim B as a friend/co Barner, is that he has been there and done that for many decades. IMO, he has the great mix of experience/willingness to teach. I hear that Jim is doing better each day. My guess ...our collective positive thots/prayers helped,eh !

I had problems with the fiber timing gears no lasting very long. I replaced the gears with Dan McEachern Bronze cam gears on two of my engines and they have been running quiet for years. I replaced the cam gear only with aluminum gears from Snyders on a few of my engines and they are silent. A little whine would give a racy sound and I wouldn't mind it on the speedster or a fenderless roadster with a warmed up A or B engine. I hope that Jim B will recover quickly. I've learned a lot by reading his posts here.
