T5 Transmission Swap

A couple questions for you folks in the know on the T5 conversion, and hopefully I am not hyjacking this thread by asking these.questions.....

1.) Based on the last picture that Coopman has posted above in #38...... Is this T5, with torque tube clam shell assembly on rear, a direct replacement for an early Ford V-8, 3 epeed top loader transmission? Or would center of X member need to be modified or completely replaced, and would the torque tube (on say a stock '35 Ford) need to be shortened?

2.) Would a stock 5 spd OD transmission as removed from a '94 Ford Ranger PU, with a V6 engine, 4 wheel drive, be a good candidate for doing this type of conversion? If not, would any parts of this transmission be useful in building a conversion transmission like the one shown in post #38?

Not sure what's in the 94 Rangers, but it's a truck, so most likely truck gearing (wide ratio). And if it's similar to earlier 4 and 6 cyl applications the input splines are different, the input shaft length is different and on and on. I would guess that little to nothing would be useful.

On the Coopman modification, if you read his write up he talks about shorting the driveshaft.

Quite from #38: "It will bolt right up to the torque tube (once the tube and driveshaft are appropriately shortened)"

Not sure how much frame modification is required, it is a really compact unit, that is for sure!

Note: If you can read the tag number that is on the transmission and post it you can find the details on the transmission.

Note: Sure it's even a T5, could be a Mazda M5OD-R1.

Im picking up a t5 from a 92 s10 tomorrow after work from about an hour east of me. Getting it for $150, thought that was fair. Now ill just need to figure out how to get my speedometer to work as im pretty sure the 92's are electrical. I figured it would be easier to find one of these.

John - the TT and shaft will have to be shortened for sure. And the crossmember will have to be modified as well, but not by very much. I wanted this thing to be as compact as possible and I think this is about as short as you can get in a T5.

Also, one thing that is obvious once you think about it.....the standard transmissions such as the S10s, etc. will work if you are going to an open drive shaft. The only way I know of to keep the torque tube is to have a transmission with a flat rear end (so to speak) so you can bolt up the clam shell.

The only way I know to get a flat rear end for a T5 is to use the Jeep 4x4 tail housing or the S10 4x4 tail housing. The Jeep one is about 4 inches or so shorter than the S10. And as I mentioned in my first post, the spline adapter is the toughest nut to crack. Getting from 23 spline Jeep to 6 spline Ford....well, there just aren't many folks doing that.

I can also tell you that the transmission is 17 inches overall as pictured in my first post.

Were you able to do the cross member frame mods for the Jeep T5 case with the body sitting on frame?

Well...technically, you may be able to do but I'm not sure I want to try. I'm in the process of doing a complete frame-off on the truck so I'll do it when I get to it. On my '36 coupe, I'm still thinking about that....Maybe I'll have some experience from the truck to see if I want to try to do it with the body on.

The substantial difference in length between the Jeep 4X4 (black paint) and the S-10 4X4 tailshaft housings. The Jeep measures right at 6". Of course, you have to utilize the corresponding-length mainshafts that work with either housing. DD

Picked my ****** yesterday after work. Seems to be in great shape! The best part is instead of a 92 it is a 84 which has the mechanical speedometer.

JSeery & Heard, thank you for the feedback on my post with questions about the Ranger PU transmission. I appreciate the input.

OK - I wanted to resurrect this thread because I thought that somewhere in here there was a description about adapting an S10 throwout bearing into the stock Ford carrier (using mechanical linkage, not hydraulic) to use with a diaphram pressure plate. Not for a flathead but I am using a T5z with mechanical speedo S10 tailshaft.

Anyway, I was looking for what someone had written up about this but have been unable to find it.

Any help would be appreciated .... thanks!

I would check with Cornhuskers, they should sell the parts. I use a different bearing set up, but I think all you need is an adapter sleeve.
