What work really good is to use the input shaft and gears from a Z-28 and the rear half of a S-10. I did this 5 years ago and am real happy with it.
trucker 46.....Using a T5 in that truck will make you have MUCH NEW admiration for it. The
T5 will totally transform the enjoyment and usefulness of that truck,
IF you begin with the
RIGHT parts, as RandyZ has stated above. You DO NOT want to use an S-10 T5 as such. You want to use a NWC (non-world-class) T5 out of a Camaro or Firebird which will have the 2.95 1st gear ratio, rather than the 4.03 or 3.76 1st gear ratio found in many S-10 T5s. To that Camaro trans, replace the tail shaft housing with a TAIL SHAFT
HOUSING, (and top cover) from an S-10. This moves the shifter position significantly forward, which will work WELL in your truck. If you also use an S-10 main shaft, you won't even have to move the speedo gear on the Camaro main shaft. The S-10 and Camaro main shafts will work with the Camaro gear set. These pieces will simply BOLT-together, and you have the gear ratios in the trans that will be totally useful and rewarding. Click on this link
BELOW. It shows a similar swap. You're going to have to modify that center crossmember, but it is a simple operation if you plan it out properly. The rewards will be
PRICELESS!!

Remember, the only part of S-10 that you should be interested in is the tail shaft housing (and trans cover with short shift shaft) which moves the shifter forward. Shown below is a Chevy (Camaro) case with an S-10 tail shaft housing (and cover) attached....exactly what you want to end-up with.
I can try to help if you have questions. Also, you may want to click on and read my "
T5 W/TORQUE TUBE" at lower left of this post for some more convincing reasoning behind the 2.95 1st gear Camaro gear set choice. Hope some of this helps.
