transmission/rear end is out of the car, cannot get the u-joint to relieve from the spline drive shaft, all bolts are removed, the ****** is hanging "limp" washrag -
suggestions??

I realize you said that all bolts were removed but did you possibly miss the one accessed through the center of the joint itself? Look through where the driveshaft splines into the rear section of the joint.

Correct me if wrong......i thought that bolt was from u joint to transmission? He should be able to separate the rear and yoke assembly from the ujoint. Perhaps im misunderstanding exactly what he wants to do.

I find it easier to leave the trans in and drop the rear out with the floor jack under the center section and pull the jack rearward, usually the driveshaft will pull out of the universal joint.

If the clam shell if off, the rear end should slide away from the transmission leaving the U-joint attached to the back end of the transmission. The U-joint is a splined slip fit to the driveshaft, if the two are not coming apart something is amiss. I would have left the trans. attached to the engine, removed the rear end then dropped the trany.
If you have not, remove the clam shell all the way, both halves and all the bolts and nuts.

I ran into this same problem on the 1930 AA I worked on. Someone never lubed the U joint cavity and the U joint was rusted tight to the driveshaft. It took a torch and a lot of hammer blows to separate it.

If the parts are well lubed, then as mentioned, just remove the clamshell and slide the rear end back and off.

i have removed all bolts/nuts from the clam shaft. u joint is stuck - most likely rust has caused the problem. yes i know about the bolt in the u joint, can't remove if can't get to it....think it is time for the "hot" wrench! i have fought this for too many hours, the rear end/trans as a unit is on the ground, stuck at the u joint, if only i had a bit of C4 :)

I have plenty of C-4 and would be glad to give you some. However Victor works just as well and doesn't leave the shop in such a mess.

Had an experience few years ago , had assembled all few days before so not frozen up . friend bought the A & as not going towed it home on a rope with me steering it, As went over a bump at 45mph it poped into gear , quickly depressed the clutch as a puff of smoke came out of the u joint , Thought nothing of it until like above owner could not get it apart , used a portapower to no avail . on inspection the universal had welded its self too the d/shaft , we gas cutted the universal off, only way to get a part . I had no answer as to why it happened & would not have believed it unless seen with my own eyes,

Here's the one that needed heat and a big hammer.

We don't need no stinkin' grease!:D

DO NOT TORCH THE BOLT!!!! You can get to the bolt and special washer that holds the
U joint to the trans. You already have the torque tube from the trans. Next hold the U joint in a straight line and you will be able to get a socket with an extension through the U joint to remove the bolt by going through the rear of the U joint. You might want to insert a screwdriver through the ujoint to hold it still when removing the bolt.

think some have jumped the track. the issue is NOT the bolt holding the u joint on the output shaft of the trans. the issue is the "slip joint" of the u bolt is stuck to the drive shaft (inner shaft, not the housing). hope this clears the water, for me it is clear as mud. however, i have used all the 4 letter words that i have ever heard, still stuck,,,,HOT WRENCH is on the way.....follow along, it may get interesting. HBD john down under??? under what????: :) texas is under water!

He can not pull the drive shaft away from the transmission. The drive shaft is froze or stuck in the u-joint.
