Stumbling Engine Fix

My go-to person for helping figure out issues and for rebuilding ignition and gas system components is our member Mr. Charles S. He again helped me with an issue causing my '47 engine to stumble whether under load or no load. I post this to possibly help others.

First drive after a year in stoirage was couple weeks ago. Car started and ran fine around the City. Week later it started and idled okay but engine stumbled at and above 1500 rpms while in neutral. Charlie suggested it was probably the coil or perhaps less likely the condensor. The existing coil was a Bosch Blue Flame unit that had low useage. It did not get hot. I got a NAPA coil and condensor Charlie recommended, installed just the coil and the engine runs fine.

Thanks for the info. It's good to hear that someone has solved an ignition related problem. I've got "no start" and intermittent spark issues on a couple "late 47" (no ignition resistor) trucks now as well that just seemed to come out of no where. I've read a number of posts and not a single one had a reply that said what actually fixed the problem...tons of good advice provided that I am working my way through. I realize there are a number of potential solutions and not everyone's similar problem will be solved the same way, but it is nice to find that someone had closure. Wish me luck.

Thanks for the conclusion. Too many folks here don't. Some start threads and don't respond to any input. Others leave us hanging. Guess taking a minute or less to tell us what worked or didn't nor give a simple thank you is too much trouble. Rant over ....

I see many posts about poor quality or faulty condensors and my suspicion naturally turned in that direction. The engine idled fine etc which meant something was malfunctioning uner the stress of higher RPM. I swapped-in my spare Charlie distributor (incl condensor) and nothing improved. So Charlie's earlier suggestion that my very low mileage Bosch coil could be bad surprised me BUT he was right-on with it.
How elated we feel when something is solved ! I was fortuunate that my malfunction was not one that inconsistantly showed itself.
