Starter Not Turning. Thoughts?

I will start by connecting a 12v battery directly to the starter to determine if it is the culprit or not. Keep you posted.

I would not blame the battery right away. I have used a few op batteries and like them. And i am hard to please. :(

Sounds like you were cranking the crap out of it. Crank for a while and give it a rest. Granted you should be able to do a compression test without worry.

Lastly what kind of cables are you using? Dont think off the shelf cables are the best setup for what you doing, 6v. But more importantly if the connections are poor all else will fail. From the cables to the starter face connection.

Bench test the starter. Meaning put the starter on a bench and put 6v to it. If it works or jumps, it shoukd be fine. The usually dont go bad that often.

Easy cheasy.... Right.

Sounds like the cables are to small. This is indicated by the fact they get hot. Get a set of 2/0 cables with good tight clean connects and I think your problem is gone. A real bad starter could make the cables hot also. G.M.

All,

Thank you for your advice. Here is what I did:

I recharged the 6v Optima battery and tried again with the right cables...nothing. So, I took the old solenoid, right cables, and a $5 starter that I purchased at a swap meet and bench tested it. Because the $5 starter slowly turned, I am suspicious of the starter currently in the car and/or connections, so I will pull it out during the weekend and bench test it.

Does anyone know how to test the armature and the field coils so I can rebuild it? Thank you.

I have a very similar issue with a Mac's starter. I put it in a year ago and not it will not turn over at all sounds like a dead battery. This is the second Mac starter in a Year and a half. I ran jumper cables from a spare 6volt battery direct to the starter to test it and it still wouldn't work. I will be removing the starter this coming weekend so I can have it bench tested at the local starter/alternator rebuild shop. I hope it is just another faulty starter. Can't wait for spring so I can enjoy my 35.

Some times the lug on starter the threads get stripped, not clean and tight.
If you have a volt meter put the neg on silinode the starter side and other to grd pos ,
try and start should see voltage. At least with a $5 starter you have a spare or core.

All,

Thank you for your suggestions and advise given. The culprit was the starter motor. I removed from the car and tested following Ford's manual, and found that the conmutator is shorted with the armature shaft. I have two other starter cores, one shorter everywhere and the other one in need of a new set of field coils.

Any ideas how to rebuild a starter meaning what needs to be painted or varnished? Have all the parts but the new set of coils.

BTW, the starer is an Autolite one with a "Chrysler Corp" metal tag, so I'm glad to remove the "infiltrator". :-D Thank you.
