Speedo cable cleaning tips?

I am wondering if anyone has any pointers for cleaning the speedometer cable of 80 years of accumulated dirt/rust/grease. I don't want to damage it in the process.
Thanks

We used to clean and lube our motorcycle control cables by putting a funnel on one and and hanging the cable vertical and putting solvent first then lube into the funnel and letting gravity do the work.

i clean mine in a small coffee canbout half full of gas, let it soak an hour or so in the can cover the can with some thing, shake the can good then remove the cable wipe off with a rag, blow off with an air nozzel then do it again, when done soak the cable in kerosene or diesel for a while dry off then lube and put it back inif the cable is real bad i bet the outer cable has a lot of crude in it to, if so take it off the car and clean the inside of it with kerosene of diesel, blow out good with air, use mechanics wire to run all the way thru the outer cable, tie a piece of cloth on the end of the wire and pull it thru the cable several times

Just put BOTH inner & outer in some carb. cleaner for over night.. Rinse, dry well, paint outer housing, inspect inner cable for kinks, being frayed, etc. if ok, A good brand of lube & install..
