Spark advance range

I have just finished going through the entire drill and F.S. Ignition.
First: The Folks at F.S. are super ! They responded to my E mails quickly!

My F.S. was not set properly by the installer. It was sluggish and also had a similar heat issue brewing.

I retimed and then just for the experience I put in Ne-Rex timing indicator and confirmed my settings with timing light.

Talking with other A owners I found my sweet spot with the timing retarded (Lever UP) around 2-4 degrees BTDC. This provided a smooth slow idle and VERY EASY start!
Lever UP 2 clicks down on throttle a very short choke and VAROOM.

Full advance is approx. 20+ degrees (40 at the Crank)

A new radiator was the solution for the rising heat issue. I now have a radiator that cools like a beer cooler! (Probably will need a thermostat in spring and fall)

Stay with it you will get it worked out and learn a lot. The folks on the barn are great!

I was having trouble with heat for the first time. I timed my A as per Purdy advised. No over heat and runs the best it ever has. Did pt new points and short proof condenser in, and adjusted the valves for the first time since rebuild, Also removed the carb for valve setting. The bolts didn't seem as tight as they should have been. The timing made a big difference. I went back to the 4 bladed fan too.
