source for black rubber mat for floor?

hi,
Marco showed me a way to replace my aftermarket "boots" for gear-shift and E-brake lever by simply cutting holes in a piece of black rubber matting and fitting around the base of the two levers, as a seal.
I went to Menards and Carquest and they looked at me like I was crazy, told me to go to a roofing supply and buy a ROLL. :-)
Anyone know where you can simply buy a piece of ~8inch square 1/8" thick rubber?
Have not tried the local Ace hardware store yet, chance they may have the 'odd' piece. Otherwise considered cutting up an old tire inner tube.:o
thanks!

How can you beat the price of an old inner tube? It has so many uses. Need the rubber strip on an old rim? cut a strip of an inner tube from a bike. Seen an old plumber us one as a drain pipe that was leaking under his toilet once. Someone had a leaking water line, used an inner tube to direct the water out the basement window. Seen it like that for 6 months or so. Tubes are cheep, plumbers are not... Sorry I'm a plumber...

If you think EPDM roofing membrane material would work, I have both 45-mil and 60-mil material left over from my flat-top roof.........FREE........

McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) certainly carries it. I prefer them to Grainger, since they are perfectly happy taking small orders from individuals.

For anybody in the SF Bay Area, Orchard Supply Hardware carries neoprene rubber sheeting in various thicknesses, sold by the square foot.

Barry, Does Marco cut undersized and stretch the rubber over the emergency lever and the shift tower? Seems you would want to use fresh rubber or it would crack. I am familiar with rubber roofing membranes. They are tough. Bob

OK, really? An After marked e-brake and shift boot are less than $3.00 at Mack"s or PV antique supply. What are you looking to spend? Like, is your limit 60 cents or what? What's wrong with the look of an after market boot?

thanks guys! I just placed an order for a 12"x12"x1/16" neoprene sheet from McMaster-Carr after finding Grainger wouldn't accept anything except a company card or Purchase Order :-) Al, thanks for the offer, I appreciate it.

Dan, nothing 'wrong' with the boots, I just don't like 'em. :-)
I've already got a set of the boots, and am now taking them off. I spent all that money and time getting a nice nickel-plated set of levers, and I don't want to cover them up.:)
