Somewhat offensive

I was a little offended by being talked down to by a member who assumed I didn't know what something was or what I was talking about. Had been a few years since I had seen one and couldn't recall what it was called. I may be new to model As, but I have been wrenching for 40+ years and have built and rebuilt my fair share of engines, transmissions, and rear ends. Did a couple of ground ups as well. All of these being on 50s and 60s era cars and pickups. Just getting into the As, I thought I might acquire more knowledge, as we all know that is one of our best tools. So I may be green yet to model A fords, I plan on learning all that I can, so that when I pass it down to my son, I will be able to help him as others have helped me. I will continue to come to this sight because for the part most are willing to answer questions without judgement. I also think I may know some things that might be of use to others. Just because you haven't heard of something, or seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And if you do learn of it and choose not to use it, that is your choice. But others may find value in it, and a use for it.

I will offer an apology on behalf of us here who do not post condescending, belittling replies to questions posed. There are always a few who somehow cannot resist making those kind of remarks. Sadly, most of the sites I frequent always have a minority of "experts" who fall in this category.

SafeWiz,

Sorry to read you've experienced a less than adult like response. It happens, all we can do ignore those responses. There are ALWAYS folks no matter the subject think they know everything about it... Fact is we're luck to remember where we put our car keys :)

Have great day and take your car for drive --you'll forget all of life's little annoyances!

I'm not sure just what happened, but please let it roll off. There are lots of really great and knowledgeable folks here and your experience is more than welcome, it is needed. I have ran across the occasional remark that would tend to upset, but you have to remember that even good people can come off a little sideways once in a while and in every group there is the best and worst personality. Please give the folks here a second chance and as for myself, I'm really glad you aired this. It may serve as a wakeup call to those who meet and interact with others on this site. Great having you here and when your area of knowledge and experience is needed, please feel free to chime in. Just remember how it feels to run across someone who offends, and try to never be that guy. Lots of questions that seem like they should be a no brainer, some may have come from me, but getting those answered, even though they may have been answered many times before is the real strength of this site.

I did not mean to offend you and I am sorry it sounded that way... I said from the beginning I didn't know what it was and On my last post I stated I did not find a need for one but also on the same post I did find the info interesting...

Stick around don't go away! Heck I'm a sucker for '28-'29 Tudors (my first Model A was a VERY early '29 Tudor w/ 1928 carryovers) and I'm hoping that you will post pics of yours over the course of time!

Besides, the bad thing about these types of social media things is, sometimes people write something that comes off 'wrong' they really didn't mean it to sound that way. Or, the guy reading it takes it differently than what was intended. If you are talking to someone face to face it can have a WHOLE lot different meaning than something that is here, on FaceBook, etc. That's the downside of today's communications. People are quickly forgetting how to actually 'talk' to each other. One reason I don't do FB. Never say never maybe someday I'll have to but for now I avoid it. It's 90% drama anyway a lot of worthless dribble.

Safe, I am fairly new to this forum and I can say from my take this site and the people have been courteous, professional, and very helpful.

Just be like your tudor and have a thick skin and just hit the next pothole with a smile.

Mitch, if indeed you are the offender then my hat off to you for coming forward and trying to make it right. That says a lot about ones character. Besides, it cant be you. The title was "somewhat offensive". You would fall in the "always offensive category":D

I was on a joint tour with the Portland Model A club (The Beavers), driving my Model T( Rose City Model T club member). One of the things we got to do was let some of the A guys drive our T's. I have been working on and driving my T and others hundreds of miles. Had one well meaning person lean his head in the drivers side while I was telling the student how to drive a T and give his instructions on how to drive to 3 of the 4 student I was instructing. Talk about biting my lip on that one. Sometimes we have to let things slide and as someone else said, often we can't tell the intent of the reply over the web because we can't see the person making the remark. We don't read every posting so may not know what a persons skill level is. Often today there are many people out there that are working on these old cars for the first time and that can translate into having never even worked on any car before. The internet is in-personal, we often do not, nor have met a poster so do not know their back history.

Thanks for all the responses, and I noticed the post I took exception to had been removed. And I will continue to come here, as I have found some exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful folks here.

This thread is a good reminder that it can be hard to communicate well through a medium like this Forum....messages don't always come across as intended since there's no body language and often little context. And then there's the added challenge that frequently the posters just don't know each other.

So....I think it's close to a miracle that there are as few threads like this one! And +1 to old31's message.

I removed the tire depth gauge post because of the way It was worded.. It could have been written differently but it was not so instead of editing it I took it out. As most on here probably know I make my living as a tech not as a writer with excellent English skills.(dad has those). It is what it is

I will concede that I might have taken your'e post differently then it was intended. But it was condescending and that may not have been your'e intention. All things aside, I thank you for your'e response.

I told the wife something like that a couple weeks ago... didn't see her for a whole week, then this week as the swelling is receding, I can just see a little in the left eye...:)

Unfortunately, there is no inflection to show when one is simply kidding, being coy or even sarcastic in these posts and replies. People get their toes stepped upon waaaay to easily in a message board, forum or chat and the result is generally a quasi-cat fight about nothing in particular other than hurt feelings or being offended. If the people involved had been in a room and face to face, the same exact wording and response would likely have never even touched an offence meter scale. Not only that, but it is also likely that both parties would actually be laughing at each other a bit in learning a little more that there is indeed a thousand ways to skin a cat and that the cat won't like any of them.

Why not simply send a pm to the individual who supposedly offended you instead of devoting a thread explaining one's background knowledge and the issue to hash all over again? A simple pm keeps such off the board and often can result in better communication for all parties involved. Even if not, it still keeps the board clean for those who have not a clue what the cat fight was all about to begin with.

It is easy enough to fall into the trap of being offended by someone else's reply or comments and I have done that twice already since being here. I too am working on improving my own communication skills in such matters so I am not speaking as any expert by far. it is a developed skill to not get so easily offended by others, so it takes practice. Me, I am returning to the hobby and so I consider myself an essential newby. It matters not what background experience I previously had over anyone else as even the experts can be wrong and are sometimes proven to be. I feel I can learn from anyone here, despite them being a newbie or an expert. It is solely up to me to decide how to take their responses and when you really get down to it, people have various tastes, experiences, ideas and thoughts as to any issue so it just seems that most here, new or not, really should put their own "offended meters" aside and learn a lesson or two on improving communication since it is a two way street. Sometimes such lessons are difficult to learn when feelings are involved though.

Of course, one can always fill out one of these government forms and make it official. (Hopefully you know I am kidding about the form and take it as such...) Geeze, it is almost an American right to be offended these days.... :-)

Have a good day..........

In defense of Mitch's post. I personally saw no reason for an apology. What was stated was not technically correct and as an authority on the subject he attempted to correct it. We can not expect that what we post will always be accepted as the gospel and sometimes it will be challenged. Sometimes we just have to not be so sensitive. Obviously in this case it is my opinion that Mitch did nothing wrong! Wayne
