Shocks: Necessity or luxury?

Well I have to say my car rides just fine without them. I have a new front spring.
But being a roadster it is probably a little lighter.

Well, I agree my '31 Sedan drove and rode great with new springs. No problem at all, until I put new shocks on and discovered the difference. It's not exactly earth shattering but certainly it's a wow. The stability and cornering are so much better. So yes shocks are worthy of the investment.

Drilling a hole in the axle has been a concern. Mostly that it will weaken it. The bolt on mounts on the rear is a definate selling point for me. I want to be able to make all original in the future if I choose.

I don't blame you for not wanting to drill holes. I'd make a bracket that clamps in place to hold the end of the shock. Others have done it, so I know you can also. I wouldn't drill, grind, or weld anything to my Model A's.
